Chapter 1
A young girl and a man rushed out of the arched doorway and into the train station. Their faces were gaunt and their clothing grubby.
The man had a look of fear, determination, and despair on his face, while the young girl attached to his hand blabbered endlessly on, completely oblivious to the man's mood. He limped heavily on every left step with a grimace. I noticed a long rusty streak dripping down from his pant leg.
The girl was about four years old, with a drab corduroy slip on. Her two long braids of dirty blond hair were plastered against her skinny body by the rain, and her sparkling eyes were as green as ivy. She looked frail and weak, but her face was no stranger to hardships and pain. The heel of her shoe was coming off, making a flapping noise against the wet concrete like an addled duck quacking.
The man glanced back at the arched doorway at regular intervals as if to check that no one was following him. The man walked at such a brisk pace that every once in a while, the young girl would trip over her feet. Patiently, the middle age man would stop, and gently help the girl to her feet.
The faint sound of a train sounded in the distance.
The man froze and listened intently for a moment, like a wolf tracking its prey. Immediately he swept up the young girl in his arms and started to run towards the train tracks, dragging his leg behind him. He muttered a few gentle words to the young girls between gasps of pain. The girl began to cry.
Her small eyes turned to asterisks and tears flowed down her face like the water during the spring snow melt. Her small pale lips grimaced and her whole face contorted with emotion only known by herself.
The train appeared around the corner, it's old wheels rattling along the tracks. The man burst into full speed as he saw the approaching train, but was still far from the tracks. The end of the train rounded the corner.
Just as the man reached the train tracks, his leg gave out and he fell on his knees. From the inside of his over coat, he took out a gold pocket watch on a faded blue ribbon. He looked at it for a second and then pressed it into the girl's hand with tears in his eyes. He hoisted the girl up above his shoulders and gave her a rough kiss on her cheek. Just as the end of the train came whistling towards him, the man pushed the girl onto the train with his final effort.
The man collapsed by the side of the track.
The train raced away into the night.
Two figures in brown appeared from the arched doorway and dragged the man away.
