PROLOGUE:

“Where is it, Gemma?” I yell, searching her messy room for the Ouija board.

“It’s under the bed!”  I climb over the pile of books, and duck underneath the edge of the bed. Gemma’s room is full of books. She’s obsessed with them. The Mortal Instruments, Harry Potter, even Twilight. I feel around for a moment until my hand clamps around something big and wooden. I pull it out and get my first glimpse. It’s a big wooden box, decorated with black painted swirls.

Gemma runs into the run and trips over a stray book. “Ow, I’m ok, I’m fine.” She scrambles to her feet, her blonde hair falling around her beautiful features. She clears a spot in the middle of the room and plops down onto it. She pats the floor in front of her, as if saying, what are you waiting for? I cross the room, carrying the heavy Ouija board. I place it carefully onto the floor, and sit down in front of it. Gemma slides it out of the box and places it in between us. I take the round stone and place it in the middle.

Gemma puts on a serious face. “You ready?” She asks. I nod and she begins. I grab a piece of paper wedged into a book, and a pencil strewn on the floor beside me, ready to write down what it spells out. “Spirit, come forward and revea––” She didn’t get that far, because the spirits were already spelling something out. I hurry to write out all the words. “MAGICDANGERDARKNESS?”  Asks Gemma.

“Magic, danger and darkness, dimwit.” I tell her.

“Ooh, sounds scary.”
