The girl and I walk out of the building that the girl called a stable with scary animals called something like hooses. The air is chilly and whips my mid-back length hair around. I wear a jacket that oddly isn't the colour white. Matter or fact neither is the girl she wears a black jacket with blue pants and brown leather boots. Those boots must be so nice at the moment compared to my white sneakers.
The sun glistens on the cold white substance that lies on the ground. Not very many people are walking about. The girl, Everly, wheels a bicycle on her left and I walk on her right. There are not very many buildings at first but the longer we walk the more houses we see. Finally we come up the a somewhat large house made of beige bricks. There is a large porch with enormous doors. The windows around the house a quite big. When we enter the house I realize that the place is quite lived in, unlike the apartment I like in with my roommates.
We walk down the hallway and enter a room with light pink walls. An elderly woman sits reading an old book with crisp pages. "Nona? Would you be able to help us?" Every requests. What can this old lady know? How is she going to be able to help me get back to my own world?
"How may I help you dear?" 'Nona' glances at me and frowns. "You're not from around here are you?"
"No I am not. I was thrown into this gruesomely frigid wasteland without my consent." I reply snarkly. I have no real reason to be displeased with the women, it's just in my nature to be rude when I first meet someone. I don't trust people very easily. Back at home it's the easiest way to survive. The faster you get that in your head the stronger you will become. We don't need friends and we don't have family we live alone.
Everly glares at and turns back to her Nona. "Alright like Ambria said, she comes from another world and she was thrown into our world by a mirror I assume. We were wondering if you happened to know anything about what happened to her and how she would be able to get back to her world." How can one girl have so much hope in someone other than herself? Everyone lets you down and no one can ever really help you.
"Ambria, right?" The women guesses. "I'm Nicoletta. Where are you from Ambria?" Adelia is polite and kind. This makes me weary of her.
"I'm from Hiraeth." Will Nicoletta know where that is? Better yet will she know how to get me back?
"Hiraeth? That must be Earth 1.0." Nicoletta mumbles to herself. Both Everly and I look confused. She quickly notices and explains. "What I'm about to tell you is highly classified information very few people know. You must keep it secret and not discuss it in public areas. Long ago, 400 years, our ancestors decided that earth, a planet we all lived on together, was no longer survivable. They decided to split us into groups and send us off to other planets like Diatora. No one knew of the other planets since everyone assumed no one on the other planets had survived. Especially no one from earth. I assume that you're wondering as to why I know that you are from earth and not some other planet. This is because there are no connections between the other planets and us. The government in charge at the time made each planet connected only to earth."
This is a lot of information to digest. What she has told us only answers a few of my questions and brings up even more. For example how did everyone forget about the other worlds? What had caused the people to deem the world unlivable? And the most important question of all how do I get back?
"So how is Ambria supposed to get home?" Everly voices my question.
"Ambria may I see your arm?" I clutch my arm to my chest self consciously. I wasn't sure what she wanted with my arm but I sure wasn't going to just hand it over. "I just want to check If there is a marking on the inside of your wrist. If you don't trust me you can check yourself." I expose my sleeve for everyone to see and notice a making that had never been there before. It was a row of numbers.
"This was not here before. What is it?" I blurt. I rub the marks subconsciously.
"That marking represents the length of your stay here, at least that's how the myth goes. When the day comes you will be pulled from this world and sent back. Unless of course you find the portal that you can use whenever you want. The length of your stay will become shorter and shorter each time."
"So does that mean anyone can make the jump?" Inquires Everly. The question was laughable, if just anyone could make the 'jump' then I'm sure more people would have known about the different worlds and we would have been constantly 'jumping back and forth'.
"No not just anyone will be able to make the 'jump' as you called it. It is said that it's all about the blood."
"What type of blood do I have?" I ask curiously.
"Your blood isn't just a type of blood." Her voice grows serious. "You see, your blood is the same as Everly's. If you were to both take a blood test, you would be identified as the same person. Have you girls felt a weird connection since you met. And why do you think Ambria landed in the stable. It's how the teleportation was designed."
I stand there shocked. I had felt a sudden pull when I first saw Everly. Maybe this Nona did know something afterall.
"That is so weird. Now what are we going to do about Ambria? She doesn't have anywhere to stay and she doesn't know anything about our world." Everly asks.
"She is to stay here. Everly would you do me a favour?" She doesn't wait for an answer, she just expects it to be done. "Would you go upstairs and set up the guest room for Ambria? Also get her some new clothes that aren't white."
