My shoulders were tugged back, pulling my head back out of the water,
"Are you crazy?" Max said swiping my wet hair off of my face. "Are you trying to kill yourself?!" He says tipping my chin up, looking me square in the face.
"Not this time," I said with a smirk. It was true. I wasn't trying to kill myself. I was trying to clear my mind. Think.
"Come on," Max say helping me up, and wiping my face with the cloth that hung on the side of the barred, bathroom window. Wilson stood outside the bathroom, alert, watching Max's every step. What was wrong with that cat?
"I couldn't sleep," I say walking out of the bathroom,
"I woke up when I heard you get up, but I thought you were going to be out soon. When you took longer I was worried. I knocked on the door, but you didn't respond. And that's when I walked in and pulled you out,"
We walked into the kitchen. I sat down at the table and put my head down. Max shuffled around the cupboard looking for something to eat. "There's canned pineapple at the back," I say looking up. He pulled it out and opened it, bringing it over to the table.
"I'm sorry about your house," I say as he leans against the counter,
"Psh, that old thing? It was a dump. I mean I-"
"No, it was your home. And because of me-"
"how is this your fault?"
"If I hadn't tried to leave that day, they wouldn't have come looking for the dead body,"
"They didn't come for the dead body. They came there occasionally. I'm wanted. I put you in danger. I'm sorry," He looked down, still holding the canned pineapple in his hand.
I stood up and stepped towards him, "Does that mean I'm wanted too? For running away with a fugitive?" I say, my lips stretched into a smile, inches from his,
"I guess so," He said leaning forward. He wrapped his arms around me and hoisted me up onto his waist,
"I guess we're just two wanted teenagers living in Manhattan in a really shitty neighborhood," I laughed. He teasingly pecked me on the lips.
"I'm sorry, did you expect more?" He asks looking at my expression. I shrugged with a laugh. He walked over to the table and sat me down on it, my legs dangling on both sides of his body. I leaned in as he cupped the back of my neck with his hands and slowly made his way down to the small of my back. I ran my fingers up his bare chest feeling his jaw and running my other hand through his hair. He unzipped my jacket and slid it off, leaving me in my white tank top. His lips led mine into a frenzy of wanting more.
"I like you," he said kissing me softly, "I like you a lot. And not only because we're possibly the last things on this earth with any emotion left in them,"
Even though we both knew that was the reason, I just said, "I like you too"
"Would you still like me, if I wasn't... human?"
For a second I was confused but thinking it was a joke I responded with a smile, "Yeah, sure, alien-boy"
"No. I'm serious. You wouldn't if you know who I really am. What I am," His expression was serious, he wasn't stuttering.
I pulled away, Looking him right in the eye. He backed up from the table.
"I should've told you. I'm putting you in danger. It wasn't meant to happen this way, I tried to tell you...
"Tell me what?"
"I'm one of...them"
I tried to jump off the table but he caught me by the arm. "Alex! Can you listen?"
"What the hell are you?!" I screamed punching him in the chest, "What do you want from me?"
I pushed him away and got down quickly. I ran to the drawer and shuffled around, looking for a knife. I held one up and leaned against the counter. It was small but sharp.
"Alex, listen to me. I'm not like them. You know I wouldn't hurt you,"
"Do I? Because all this time I thought you were a freaking human and now...you're telling me, that you're one of Craig's merciless, shit-heads? I don't believe you. Prove it,"
He steps forward, "No! Stay there," I say pointing the knife towards him. He reaches into his eye and taps out a brown contact lens, revealing bright green eyes that glowed lightly.
I screamed. He ran to me, "Listen, I love you, and there's no way I'll let anyone touch you-"
"LET GO OF ME!" I push him out of the way, but he pulls back in, grabbing my face in his hand and smashing a kiss on my lips. I quickly planted the knife into his side. "AGH! What the hell, ALEX?!," He says falling onto the ground in front of him holding the wound that bled through his shirt. I didn't hurt him enough to kill him just to distract him while I tried to escape. I ran out of the kitchen, grabbing my jacket off the floor, and propped a chair under the handle.
I grabbed my backpack and stuffed my things into it. My binoculars, maps, clothes, water, some food, my gun, and other necessities, as much as I could carry. Max was trying to get out of the kitchen, "Alex! Let me out! You don't understand!"
I put my jacket back on over my tank- top and zipped it up. Wilson watched me from where he was perched on the window. He looked out of the window and stood up, hissing. I walked over and saw three mutants walking towards the apartment. "SHIT!"
I ran to the bathroom gathering supplies to put in the other small bag that I kept for emergencies. I opened it and put all the necessities that remained. There was still space for Wilson in there, so while he was protesting I gently settled him in the bag too, zipped it up slightly until there was just enough space for his head to pop out, and slung it over my chest.
I was about to walk out when I heard the explosion in the entrance of the apartment. My trap had worked. Even though the explosion went off I still heard the deep voices of the male mutants yelling downstairs.
