Darkness enveloped the room. Only the sound of the coo coo clock chiming midnight could be heard through the abyss. Brandy looked around the room. An ominous feeling spread through her very being. She could feel that she was being watched, Being hunted by some unknown force. The phantoms were merciless and tormented her night after night. She clung to her blanket as she peered into the darkness hoping to glimpse salvation from the specters. Suddenly light flashed through the room. Shadows danced along the walls and the hellish forms of her imagination came to life. Her heart pounded. She tried to remember that it was just the lights from a passing car flickering through the window. She tried to muster the courage to close her eyes and sleep. Sleep however would not come. Driven mad by the sound of scratching from underneath her bed she remained motionless, clutching her blankets even tighter. What horror could be lurking below? What demon had spawned beneath her? What devilish torture must she endure? It was all she could do to stave off the scream that was welling up within her.

She slowly and cautiously reached to the nightstand. Her fingers grasped a cylindrical object. She pulled her hand back along with the object. After a quick motion of her thumb, light shot up to the ceiling. Clinging desperately to the flashlight, she slowly shined the light around the room. First the light hit the door, then the closet. Gradually it made its way around the room. Nothing seemed out of place. Only the stillness and loneliness of a dark room greeted her. But the noise still continued louder than before. Determined to prove to herself that the source of the noise was merely her imagination. She bent over the edge of the bed, lowering her head with the light shining exactly where her gaze was set. Pulling up the covers she revealed the empty space below the bed. A terrible noise like that of something running, clawing toward her was emitted somewhere out of the radius of the light. A black, form sprinted from the far corner of the bed. Brandy's soul quivered. This she thought was the end. The form covered the distance with both speed and malicious intent. Brandy felt the grasp of small claws, digging into the hand she held the light with. Brandy screamed and shot up in bed. She narrowly avoided dropping the light. She used it again to glance around the room. Thump! She felt the sensation of some unknown and terrible creature pounce on her bed. The thing begin to run up her legs from the foot of the bed. She leaped up from her position and stood at the head of the bed. She pointed the light at her best estimation of where the monster was. The light revealed a small form on the bed. It was mostly black with some streaks of white. Its claws were sharp and ready to attack. She began to relax and slide back down into bed. She realized that the demon she had feared, was the small and energetic kitten she had taken in the day before.
