The ship appeared in the sky over Stockholm Sweden almost three years ago. Over four miles long, two miles wide and a mile and a half thick at its thickest and a half mile at its narrowest it looked like a giant black wedge floating silently in the air.
Jack never saw or heard the announcement himself but several of the people he was on the run with over the years told him about it. Of course, the version of the story you got depended on who was telling it. Some people said it was a threat, some said it was an offer of help but either way the message was clear... The Earth was going to be destroyed and humanity would be wiped out if the people of the Earth didn't surrender to this mystery ship.
When the world didn't say yes immediately was when the attack began. It started with Sweden and Denmark. Then Germany and France went silent. Then we lost England. There were no images of burning cities on TV and no waves of attacking ships that anyone could speak of. Places just went silent. Reports came in of the vessel appearing over a city and then there was nothing. No more news reports, no more social media, people who try to go to these cities in cars or aircraft vanish. Nothing comes out of those places.
Within the first few months Europe was gone. All around the world the people panicked and fled major cities as fast as they could. On top of everything else it was the coldest summer on record for the fifth year in a row which didn't make things any easier.
With freezing temperatures and snow covering the ground in early July it certainly was an unusual sight for the residents of Houston Texas. Jack and his brother's family were down at a local market a few miles outside the city sifting through what was left after the looters had ransacked the place when the reality of the attack hit home for them. They were trying to stock up on food and supplies when Galveston and then Houston went silent. Minutes later they found themselves in a small group of people fleeing for their lives in the hill country of east Texas.
That was two years ago and over the course of those two years the group had been hunted down one by one until only two remained.
