Chapter 1
I walked in the shop and I owned it. I made it mines. I made it my runway. I'm a African American female tattoo artist. I'm apart of a small percentage but I'm the best of all them tricks. The name is Brooklyn. Yeah Brooklyn like Brooklyn. I got this name from my momma. She was a drunk musician who use to sing in lounges late at night and play the piano. She committed suicide on my fourteenth birthday. She was born in Brooklyn and that's where she grew up. She moved to Miami with my Sperm-Donor when she was just fifteen and pregnant with me. I can't call him my father because he wasn't there in my life he was a coward. Anyways that's basically me. I started tattooing when I was sixteen. Before I loved to draw. I loved to draw anything. My mom encouraged me to draw anything I saw. I got better as time went on. I'm 27 now.
I walked in the shop I worked at called Black Sam's. it's located in the heart of Dade-County. I clocked in and I got ready at my station. I was the only girl who worked here. I saw Riley, Travis, and Niko walk in the shop. There my co-workers and also the pains in my butt but I got love for them though.
"Aye Brooklyn what's up?" Travis asked as he started setting up his station. I shrugged my shoulders and shook my head. Early in the morning I liked to concentrate on my work for later on. I stayed booked at this shop. I was the hood Kat Von D. We finally opened up the shop and we were ready. Keke our receptionist in the shop walked to the front desk and started calling up people to meet with us about getting tatted.
Some thick red chick with these high waisted coochie cutter shorts on and some ugly crop top came up to me.
"Are you um Brooklyn?" She asked popping her gum. I looked her up and down.
"Yeah." I simply replied.
"Yes I have a appointment with you right now. I want a tattoo like this! I think it's so dope!" She said holding this picture of a white girl smoking a fat blunt. I giggled right in her face.
"Um yeah I think your tattoo idea is lame as hell! You want a white girl smoking a blunt on your thigh and you black?!" I said laughing at her idea once again.
"Excuse me but I like it. Is there a problem boo?!" She said with her hands on her hip. Everybody was staring at us.
"Are you mad or hella mad? Seriously chick the problem is that I ain't doing your tat because its balls. I dont do ratchet tattoos. So yeah..." I said handing the paper back to her. I turned around and she pushed me. I paused for a quick second I punched her right in her mouth. Riley and Niko were holding us apart. My boss Sam came out. He was shaking his head at me. Great I had to hear another lecture from his bald butt!
"What's the issue ladies?!" He asked with a attitude. How great?
"She is just mad that her little tattoo idea is lame and dumb and I ain't doing it!!!!!!" I said looking her up and down. She spit right in my face. I jumped up and Riley pushed me back and held me. I hate spit!
"Brooklyn we need to talk like Asap! And mam I'm sorry about the incident again on our other artist can help you out." Sam said as I followed him back to his office. I sat down in the chair and looked at my black stiletto nails. Sam sighed.
"You're talented but you got a messed up attitude." Sam said staring at me.
"I know I'm talented! No need to tell me I gave a attitude. I don't! I'm just real!" I semi yelled.
"Look you being real is giving us a reputation. Don't have such a big head thinking you are the best and people just throw themselves at you! I can let you go just as quick as you came." Sam said rubbing his black bald head. I rolled my eyes and I walked back to my station and I saw some guy at my station looking at my portfolio. He had on a pair of black harem pants and a pair of timberlands and a tiger t-shirt. He had pretty hazel eyes and he was fairly light skin. He was full of tattoos on his arms, fingers, neck, and one under his ear. He was looking at my portfolio smiling and shaking his head. Travis looked at my blank expression on my face. He knew I was about to nut up!
"Excuse me but why are you at my station?" I said with my hand on my hip. He looked at me and licked his lips. I sighed. Another low class dog!
"Oh the name is Zeus ma. Your artwork is out of this world! I heard about you!" He said closing my book. I snatched it out his hands.
"Um excuse me but customers stay in the lobby area not at the workers station." I said not staring at his eyes but Looking down.
"Swerve! I'm not no customer I'm a worker here too little mama! Today my first day starting here just chill out ma." He said touching my hand. I slapped his hand.
"I'm not your ma or little mama first off! And since this your first day you don't know me obviously. Don't sit at my damn station or look through my stuff if you ain't God or if you not paying." I said getting him out my seat.
"Attitude isn't good on a beautiful female like yourself, especially a talented one!" He says smirking as he walked up to his new station. I started blushing. I sat at my chair and waited for a customer.
Nobody came to get anything done by me. I felt different today. Usually I have customers lined up for me. I guess it's a slow day. I guess! That Zeus dude had everybody lined up for him to do their tattoos. I wasn't envious of him I just thought it was nuts that he just got here and he was already busy with people. I just started sketching in my note pad until lunch time. I felt a warm hand on my shoulder.
"Who the f...oh it's you." I murmured at Zeus. He smiled at me.
"That's some dope artwork there. It's a beautiful pin-up girl!." Zeus said. I closed my note pad right in his face.
"It's not just any pin-up chick it's my mother...." I replied not believing I was engaging in a conversation with him.
"She is gorgeous just like her daughter." Zeus said as he touched my face.
"Hold up nigga! You got me bent! I don't know you like that okay! Don't be touching my face and stop being nosy and looking at my stuff. Like DAMN!" I snapped at him. He moved back.
"You just another bitter black witch! You can't take niceness from no man! I mean are you a lesbian or what you don't want me getting close to you." Zeus yelled back as he pushed me to the wall. I looked around and saw no one was here but us and it was lunch time. I pushed him off of me.
"I ain't no bitter black witch. I'm a African American employed woman who is sick and tired of you trying to be Casanova like I don't even know you." I said to him. Looking at him straight in the eyes. He pinned me against a wall. He kissed my neck and my face all over. I kissed him back too. What was I doing? I pushed him off of me and I slapped his face.
"Don't you ever kiss me again!!!!!" I said as I threw some of my ink I had in a container on his white shirt.
"Witch!" He said as he rushed in the back to the bathroom. I wrote a note to Sam telling him I was taking the day off. I jumped inside of my car and I drove all the way to my apartment. I opened the door and I saw my roommate Candace eating a bowl of ice cream.
"Girl it's not five yet? What you doing here?" She asked as I plopped down on the couch.
"Some fresh co worker of mines decided to lock lips with me." I murmured as I was looking into space.
"Did you kiss him back? Was it Travis?" She asked all interested in my business.
"He is some new kid named Zeus. He caught me off guard. Anyways I don't want to talk about it!!!" I said as I rolled my eyes at her and took her bowl of ice cream. She just sighed and went into her room. I've been knowing Candace since high school. She is my home girl. She got a job at some little boutique on South Beach. I forget the name. Anyways that night I couldn't get any sleep. I had several dreams of Zeus and me cuddling together and kissing and grinning. I was going nuts. I have no feelings for him! Please I don't even know homie like that! Do I?
