Indigo looked back to where she had left Social Repose with the cat she had rescued earlier that day, from the village it attacked.
She was surprised to see that he was looking back at her. She blushed from shock but waved him over. Social Repose made his way over to her and she smiled through the heart wrenching ache that started in her bones.
"I have to meet the fae queen. You are welcome to come or stay here." Indigo said in her royal tone.
That caught social repose off gaurd. After the ball she had become a friend and had been so diffrent, but this tone seemed cold and detached. Like she didn't care about anything.
With a pit in his stomach he looked into her eyes about to say he'd stay, but he saw something there. A sadness that cut so deep that Social Repose could feel it. So he said instead "I would be glad to join you to see the queen. I would like to meet the person responsible for such a lovely place. Sahara come."
Indigo raised her eyebrow at him "You named it?"
"I named him." Social Repose said proudly.
Indigo had a ghost of a smile on her face when he picked up Sahara.
They departed on their ten minute journey to the hollow tree that the queen resided in.
The queen was a pixie that was slightly larger than the rest. She had pale skin and deep drown hair that curled in a magical way that never seemed messy. Her wings took up the entire tree base and looked like those of a butterfly. What surprised Social Repose was that her face seemed a greenish blue. Her lips lacked all color. Almost as though she were dying and only had half a breath left to say what she needed too.
"Miss Sol?" Indigo's voice asked barely above a whisper.
A croak came from the bed and Social Repose could feel Indigo shake. In a desperate attempt to make her feel better he grabbed her hand and squeezed, to say that he was there.
Indigo squeezed back. Hard. If Social Repose hadn't been a warrior he would have winced and cried out in pain.
"Come here my child." the dying voice said again.
Slowly Indigo took steps forward dragging social repose forward with her.
Social Repose was bewildered how they fit inside a tree they were bigger than a moment ago. Over the past couple of days he stopped questioning what seemed to be the impossible.
As they got closer social repose noticed a small pendant hanging from her neck. It was a fairy with wings folded around the lower torso and legs. The hands were folded across the chest and looked as if the marble figure dying.
"Indigo, my child, I've missed you." Indigo began to shake and Social Repose squeezed Indigo's hand tighter.
"Lucinthia. I heard the news and came as fast as i could."Indigo's voice was cold. Colder than she meant and though both people in the room knew she didn't mean it, a shiver ran down both their spines.
"Indigo, it is okay to grieve those that are not yet dead. It is okay to feel the presence of loss before ringing deaths door. Please stay with me in my final moments as you did in my first. Sit and hold my hand. Take the pendant of royalty from my corpse and take my place." Lucinthia said comforting her life long companion.
Slowly as if not to break the air around the fragile queen indigo reached out and held the queens hand. The queen smiled and held on tight.
After hours of sitting in the tree the sun began to set. As the sun fell behind mountains, Lucinthia the queen of fairies closed her eyes for the last time and the pendant around her neck turned to stone.
A single tear slipped down Indigo's cheek and she yanked the pendant off og her dead friend.
Social repose knew that as a royal ypu saw death. You saw it daily walking in the court and monthly as you went to funerals. He knew that as a lucidian royal you witnessed war death as you blessed each causality. Bit you never saw someone you were close to die. Not this intimately. They would hide the sick and if you were close you would get the best treatment in the world. He knew Indigo was broken. He also knew she couldn't process loosing life as it slipped through her fingers.
Indigo tied the stone pendant around her neck and ignored social repose as he stared at her.
Suddenly there was a blue glowing around Indigo. She looked at tge pendant and watched it change. It was a girl with long curly hair that had markings on her face. She had one led and half a fush tail. It represented what her soul looked like.
Once the pendant had changed the glowing stopped and Indigo tucked the pendant into her dress and looked up at social repose who had at some point in the last hours let go of her hand.
Sitting and staring at eachother. Minutes ticked by and no words were said. Social repose didn't lnow what to say and Indigo feared she would break apart if she said anything.
"I'm sorry." Social Repose said and then their was silence.
The sudden realization her best friend would never be seen again crashed over Indigo with those words. Slowly the silence crushed Indigo's chest and she ran into social repose holding him tight as she sobbed into his chest.
Social repose was confused for a moment before he wrapped his arms around her. There they stood holding eachother in the dark, the only sound was Indigo's sniffles. So long time no update....
