Chapter 2

As I approach the door to the locker room, I felt uneasy. Never in the 2 years I had been playing on the Westridge Falcons soccer team had practice ever been canceled. I take a deep breath and open the door. I feel a rush of cool air slap me across the face. I look around the locker room and see all of my team mates sitting on the bench with a spot in the middle for me. All I could hear was…nothing. It was silent. I took my seat and saw the boys soccer coach, Coach Perez, standing beside our Principal, Principal Burns. Coach Perez cleared his throat and finally spoke.

“Girls, I am sure you are all wondering why you have been called here this morning. Well I am sure it will come as a surprise to you, but Coach Dana will no longer be with us.” He said.

Thoughts flooded my brain, “Oh my gosh, is she dead?” “Did she go to jail?” “Did she get fired?”Then Coach Perez said

“She got married…”

Who would have guessed that those three words would have flipped my already spinning life upside down.

“She has moved with her husband to Italy. We found this out a few months ago and have been trying to find another Coach for you, but it seems as though no one wants the job. I am very sorry girls, but the girl’s soccer program has been canceled,” He finished.

I tried to take a deep breath and process what he was saying. No more soccer means no more escape and no escape means… Rose.

“Ok Dyl, here is your new baby sister.”

Her white pale skin radiated off the lights in the bright hospital room.

“She is very fragile, so sit in the chair and you can hold her ok?” my dad said looking extremely cautious.

“Ok” I replied.

As I looked in to my new baby sister’s eyes I noticed that she didn’t look like my baby dolls I played with at home… something was wrong, I just didn’t know what.

“Dyl?” my Dad said interrupting my train of thought.

“Have you picked a name yet?”

Her name! I had almost forgotten! I looked around the room and my eyes landed on a single white rose in a vase on the bedside table. The white matched her skin and the fragile petals reminded me of my father’s cautioning words. Then it hit me, I knew what her name should be.

“Rose,” I said.

As I looked around the locker room I saw my former teammates looking to me for an reaction, a protest, something, after all I was the star athlete and the team captain.

“So that’s it?” I asked Coach Perez angrily. “You’re just going to let 20 of Ohio’s best soccer players just quit. After all we have done for this school! We won the state championships the last 2 years in a row!”

He gave us a heartbreaking look, “I have done all that I can girls, I am so sorry.”

I slowly felt myself slipping…

“Principal Burns!” I shouted pleadingly, “Isn’t there something you can do?”

“Girls, you all know I have supported this team throughout the years”, he started,” But it seems as though the time has come for the program to be terminated.”

“Terminated…”I thought to myself, “What are we vermin”

“Fine.” I replied.

“Girls, let’s get out of here, we are obviously not wanted” I instructed coldly.

The girls followed my orders and proceeded to walk out the locker room door. Just as I was about to leave, I heard Coach Perez call my name.

“Daniels, I mean Dylan. Please wait!”

“Yes?” I countered stiffly.

“I have an offer for you.”

“Unless it involves me and soccer, I’m not interested.” I replied.

“I want you to play for me, left forward.” He stated.

“But you are the boys varsity Coach, I can’t play for you…I’m a girl! Are you trying to make me even more of an outcast?”

“I am fully aware of the fact that you are indeed female Miss Daniels, however you are the strongest player the girls team had, and stronger than most of my boys.”

“If I play for you, and I am not saying I will, what’s the catch?”

“You play for me and you will not only be starting, but will have all of the privileges my guys do. I can give you all of this; all I ask is that you give me 100%. That means no distractions and no “love affairs” with my players.”

My heart slammed against my chest. The thought of playing soccer again instantly gave me a feeling of warmth.

I could play soccer again. I could have my escape…but only if I agreed. Then my body was caught in a wave of chills…

One tiny problem, Jake is on the team.
