The side walk eased by under me as I made that confusing walk home. My mind played every inch of the "dinner". But the one thing I only came to understand about the dinner, was that there was no dinner at all.
"Just fake ass roll playing." I said aloud to myself.
I could feel my veins pumping with sadness and insecurities as they shot up to my brain. Beginning to fill it with negative thoughts. Quickly, I pulled out my phone and scrolled down a few numbers and then pressed call. The phone rang a couple of times then picked up.
"Hello?"
"Lady?"
"Well isn't this something, my child is alive." My body immediately loosened as my mom's humor seeped through the phone. "I am serious Kurb, we were about to send a squad team down on your ass. Why havn't you called me?"
"I don't know lady, been busy I guess."
"Busy with what? Oh wait, I know, living the free life. Am I right?"
"If you want to call it that." I smiled widely to myself.
"Mhm, how are you sweety? I miss you." My heart sunk at my moms last three words. I sighed softly trying to find the right words to reply. "I heard that sigh, girl whats wrong?"
"Nothing, nothing. I just miss you too. You don't realize how lonely living on your own could be."
"You are not alone child, you have Braidyn."
"Yeah, but still. Like, we hardly ever see each other cause we are both out running errands and what not."
"You havn't made any friends or anything?"
"Yeah I have, but there is nothing like family."
"Well isn't that the truth. Well now that you have finally called maybe we can set up a time for us to come visit. We would love to see your first place." Raising my head back up I thought about the apartment. Their was little stuff everywhere. Cups on the counter, bills on the table. "Keeping it clean and tidy?"
I rose my eyebrow and smiled. "Of course lady," I dropped my head back down and slowed my pace. "you ain't raise no pig."
"And I sure as hell didn't raise an illiterate child either. It's: You didn't raise a pig." Her warm motherly laugh echoed threw the phone. "I swear the more us parents teach you kids the less you retain." I smiled at my mothers joke.
"How have you been mom?"
"Oh I have been fine, living life sweety."
"Thats good, staying out of trouble?"
"Child no, I was just bailed out of jail this morning."
"What?" My body stopped dead in it's tracks.
"Yeah, I was with your Aunty Zel and Minda. These thangs had the nerve to try and buy weed from an undercover cop and since I was with them I was guilty by association."
"Mom, no!" My mouth was hanging as I processed the story. "I really do hope your kidding."
"No Kurbi, Vence had to pay 500 dollars to get me out." I shook my head in disbeliefe.
"Poor Vence, I bet he doesnt know what to do with you." I began walking again.
"Oh he knows."
