Chapter 1
This is going to be hard. There is no doubt about it, that this will be hard. You can plan this all your life and never be ready. Lives will be lost. Lives will be saved, but lives will be lost. My heart tells me that this is wrong; let other people, other spies, that are better than me, smarter than me, deal with the problems a certain terrorist organization causes. Then I think about what the Circle has done to my family and people I love you know exactly what I need to do.
What I Need To Do
A list by Cameron Ann Morgan
1) Wash my hair (with conditioner this time) Because if Macey sees me she'll start hyperventilating
2) Make a plan
3) Come up with a team
4) Plan some more
5) Eat
6) Rescue a certain ambassador's 18 year-old son... in Rome.
Through the crowded corridors there were sounds of girls saying their goodbyes before leaving for the winter break.
"Anna, try to send me a postcard from Spain!" Eva said.
"Only if I get one from Italy from you first!" Anna replied.
Spain and Italy. My winter break have never been that exciting. Usually they consisted of flying to Nebraska on the first day of break then spending the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa Morgan. But this year I am positive that it will be very different. I can't picture yet what is really going to happen, where I will be, or who I will be with.
Which makes me think of this so called "team" I'm going to assemble. I do know that Bex, Liz, and Macey (who stuck me with the job) will join me. But who else?
I know that my mom and aunt should not be involved because they wouldn't support kidnapping Preston. Well kidnapping is kind of harsh. Saving is more like it. What about Agent Edward Townsend? Heck no. Just because he is on my security detail does not mean his on my good side.
Joe Solomon I would consider but I don't think he would support this decision either. Of course I would love if my favorite teacher would come along with me on this oh so covert operation, but sadly my mother has probably already got to him.
And that leaves one more spy. Zachary Goode. Yes. Yes, he is going to come along. Over the now two (almost three) years that I have known Zach, I've supposedly learned all the many, many secrets he has kept. And I think it's really sweet that he trusts me with them. Anyway there is one and only one reason that I am bringing Zach along, because he is one of the most excellent, complex, mysterious spies I know. Bringing him along has absolutely NOTHING to do with my still unsure feelings about him. I think. Okay, let's face it. They aren't that unsure anymore...
Wandering through the hallways I stumbled upon his room. I knocked twice on Zach's door and he opened it.
Standing in the doorway he said, "Hey Gallagher Girl, what brings you around here?"
"We need to talk" I said pushing past him.
Zach's room was still really clean. Obviously he is not letting go of his old habits. Next to Zach's bed there is a packed suitcase ready to go. I wonder where he is going. I speak before thinking about it.
"Where are you going" I say frowning and referring to the suitcase.
"A spy's gotta be ready for flight at any time Cam" Zach replies
"Guess that rule doesn't apply to teenage girl spy amnesiacs." I say jokingly.
All he does is smile that smile that makes me feel warm all over. And to think I once found it annoying.
"What's up Gallagher Girl?" He says as he sits on the bed and begins putting on his shoes.
"It's about," I lean in closer to make sure we are not heard but in the Gallagher Academy, someone will always here you, "Preston".
Zach nods his head at me and says, "Who's gonna, you know, go to do that."
"That's why I'm here, I don't want you to come." I say
"What?" He said with a serious voice.
"I'm kidding." I say laughing, "I want you to come."
"Well I wanted to at first but now I don't know. I think I'm changing my mind." He said.
"Oh so now I have to beg you to come with me." I tell him with a smile.
"Something like that."
"Fine."
He moved from sitting on his bed to on the dresser across the room. I was leaning on the wall in a corner. I could tell he wanted a little more than a discussion so I straighten up and walk forward to him slowly.
When I am finally standing in front of him, he asks, "Whatcha doing Gallagher Girl?" smiling down at me.
"I am using the fine art of persuasion."
"And what would tha-"
Before Zach could finish, I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulled his head down to mine, and kissed him.
He hopped down off the dresser and put his warm hands on my waist and pulls me close. Zach ran one hand down my back, and the other through my now longer than shoulder length hair. His touch sent chills throughout my entire body. We break apart. Our faces are centimetres apart when I ask, "Will you come with me now?"
"Hmm..." He says.
And he kisses me again.
"Yes. And you know it's going to take a lot to separate me from you." Zach says when he breaks apart. We just stand there, We are interrupted by a knock, the door bursting open and a, "Hey Zach! Yeah I would really appreciate it if you let go of my friend now."
Spy training or not, Zach and I practically jump apart and look at Macey McHenry.
