I Owe Her My Heart
..............
48 hours.
Only 48 hours.
He didn’t know what to think, what to feel. He was scared, but what of?
Dying.
If he didn’t get a heart transplanted within 48 hours he wouldn’t be able to live anymore. His family was devastated after they heard the news and promised they would get a heart transplant but he knew it wasn’t as easy as that.
There was another girl there with him, her bed in the opposite direction from his, also fighting for her life but she didn’t seem to as scared as he was. Or maybe she was just hiding what she truly felt. He didn’t know. But for some reason, he felt like he should say something to her. After all they were both in the same boat together. “Hey” he softly called out. Her deep green eyes snapped to his direction a small smile playing on her lips. “Hi” And like that they began talking. Nothing about their lives ending, or the sadness they clearly felt. They just talked like two normal teenagers with no worries at all.
“You wanna be a writer?” she asked him surprised.
He nodded. “Yep. Best-selling author of this time”
“It’s so cool that you already have your future planned and you’re only seventeen”
He smiled weakly. Both of them knew that the future was something that wasn’t in their hands anymore, yet it felt nice to talk about it and not get the pity looks he got from his family and friends. “How about you?”
“Nah, I’m just gonna wing it you know? See where life takes me”
“See what’s really out there” he finished as he leaned back on his bed. “Yeah I get that”
She smiled. “Finally someone does. My momma thinks I’m nuts for throwing about my education and shit like that away. I’m eighteen now, my life you know?”
“Yeah I know. But parents, they just—”
“They just forgot what it’s like being a teenager”
He chuckled nodding his head agreeing to the statement completely. Earlier he thought she would be someone shy, someone quiet but she turned out to be a little bit more crazier than he thought was possible. And the way she spoke her thoughts out loud was refreshing.
..
“I have good news” the doctor announced as he walked into the room just when they were about to call it a night. “We’ve finally got a heart transplant” the two teenagers looked at each other their eyes twinkling. Maybe there was hope after all. “But, there’s only one” he said gently almost afraid of their reactions.
They didn’t know what to feel then.
Only one of them could survive? How was that fair?
Hours had past.
The sun started rising the next day and after a restless sleep he still didn’t know what to think, what to feel.
He was afraid of dying but, he was more afraid of losing her. In the short time they had known each other she became like a best friend, maybe even someone he could see dating in the future despite the one year age gap. He couldn’t lose her. And he wouldn’t. She deserved to live more than he did. Sitting up on his bed he looked across the room to see she was sleeping soundlessly in her bed.
Just then the doctor walked in so he quickly took his chance and started talking. “Doc, I don’t need the heart transplant. Can you just give it to her? She need-”
“The decision has already been made”
“What do you mean?” he asked confusedly
“He means I’m giving you a chance to live”
Repeating the words in his head he looked at her shocked. “What?”
“Ian, I’m eighteen so therefor I can cancel the heart transplant without my parents’ concept. You on the other hand can’t, so the heart’s yours” she explained with a smile on her face not looking one bit bothered about the fact she just gave up her life so he could live. Tears started whelming in his eyes, “No” was all he could manage to say as he looked at her helplessly. Why would- why would she do this? For him?
Reading his mind she continued to smile, “You have a brighter future than I do Ian. You’ll make it far”
He shook his head trying to get the words out, anything but he couldn’t. He was breaking down. This wasn’t what he expected. He wanted her to live, her to have a future and have a family one day. Not him. He wanted her to be happy, away from the pain but, she obviously wanted the same. “I-”
“Go you big goose. Get that operation done fast and then come back and we’ll talk” she said grinning. Even though he could tell she was exhausted, her green eyes still held that glow and he knew then, he couldn’t change her mind. “I’ll be here when you get back, promise”
But that promise broke. Because when he finally woke up after the operation. She was pronounced dead.
--I Owe Her My Heart is the best-selling novel in the USA with sales up to 10.3 million copies. A touching love story about a young man going through…
He shook his head a small smile upon his face as he put the article down. It was still unbelievable of how far he has achieved in a matter of months. All because he had a second chance to live. All because of her.
“You have a brighter future than me Ian. You’ll make it far”
She was right. He did make it far, but his world was nothing without her. He still felt empty, he still felt the same pain he had two years ago when he lost her.
He still remembered her smile, her eyes, her voice. Her everything. She was still in his heart and forever will be. He knew wherever she was she watched over him every day, and she knew how much she meant to him.
I own you my heart angel.
