I disliked humans.
Yet at this very moment I was surrounded by them. Moms walking down the sidewalk dragging their pesky children, multi colored cars with humans inside, businessmen yelling through their phones.
Funny because that's exactly what I had been doing a few minutes ago: yelling through the phone. The reason why was because Jacky (my best friend) decided to cancel our plans for a "doctors appointment". Now I found myself sitting on a bench in front of God knows what store and watching people go about their business. I had no plans for the day, so I called Andrew (one of my guy friends that was currently hitting on me, because who wasn't hitting on me?) Anyways, Andrew had these piercing green eyes and a muscular build that fit him well because he was always ready for a fight. Despite being chased around school by millions of girls, I didn't want to be in a relationship with him. I always made it clear that I would never like him the way he likes me and he understood but was severely persistent. He answered on the 3rd ring.
"What's up, cutie?"
"Hey Andy,"
"Why do you sound upset?" He questioned, again overly protective.
"Jacky ditched me and I'm alone in front of a," I glanced behind me at some ginormous red circles. "a Target."
"The one across Panda Express?"
"Yeah,"
"What a coincidence, I'm headed down that street right now, don't move." This of course, was not a coincidence as I heard a house door close along with a jingle of keys. "Why did Jacky ditch you?"
"Doctors appointment"
"Oh. Guess what? You won't believe what happened today when I went to..." I tuned his voice out as I spotted a sparkling object close to the end of the sidewalk in my peripheral vision and walked over to it.
✨✨✨
I found myself actually walking to Target. Joel could've driven me but he "had to stay because the computer would turn off and we'd lose all of our silly covers". But hey, at least I could get some fresh air.
Only as I turned my head to see a shiny object close to the road did I see her. Allen Vanport. My ex-girlfriend. She was across the street from me, outside of Panda Express and picking at her nails. She couldn't see me walking alone, because then she'd want to talk to me and I was far done from even being in the same room as her. She glanced in my general direction and panic washed through me. Hide, blend in, hide.
Without giving it a second thought I grabbed the wrist of a girl that was halfway bending to reach for the shiny object I had seen before. She gasped as I put her hand around my neck and snaked my hand around her waist. I snuggled my head down into the crook of her neck, so that the back of my head faced Allen, and toke in a breath of gingerbread scent.
"Don't move, please. I promise I won't hurt you." I whispered into her ear. She stiffened and I realized she had a phone held up to her ear, because there was a distant male voice panicking on the other end. He pronounced her name in a Spanish way, although his accent was not Spanish.
"Isabelle??! What happened? Why'd you gasp!? Answer me, goddammit."
"I'm, uh, fine." she croaked.
"I'm on my way don't move." Beep. He hung up on her.
I snuck a glance at Allen and sighed when there was no sight of her. The so called 'Isabelle' shoved me away. Suspicion washing over her breathtaking features. That said a lot, because I only ever called my mother and grandma breathtaking.
