As Ann descended the spiral staircase from her room to the small kitchen deep inside the Tardis, she saw a tall, thin figure at the sink with a tea kettle in a stripped bathrobe and mens pjs. She wrapped the humming Doctor in a hug from behind and smiled as he looked over his shoulder to see the little brunette woman. She had slept for hours after their last adventure and the last thing she remembered was falling asleep curled beside her Timelord. "Well hello there Sleeping Beauty," he cooed through the tune he was humming which made her give a small giggle. His smile only grew as he tried to move to put the kettle on the stove but found he was stuck to the spot, as she gave a small huff, squeezing him tighter every time he tried to move. He chuckled hanging the handle of the teapot over the sink nozzle and turned himself around embracing his companion in a warm, soothing hug. " I had a nightmare..." she mumbled as she burrowed herself farther into her protectors arms. It was as if he could chase the bad things that haunted her sleep away. His smile fell to a frown as he held her closer, it wasn't uncommon for her to have bad dreams but he hated to see her so scared of her own memorise, distorted by sleep. Ann had had it quite hard during the Time War, fought on the front lines, they had even met there once or twice, helping the other up or shoot down a Dalek one didn't see. If he had ever let himself sleep, he too was sure he would have similar night terrors, but Ann had grown accustomed to sleep as a human, a habit she could break if she really tried, but he didn't mind having to stay in her room to calm her down when she woke up screaming or crying. He held and soothed her whispering reassuring things in her ear that she was safe and he would make sure it stayed that way. Once she had sniffled for the last time, nodding, he lifted her chin with a warm smile and kisses her forehead as she began to smile weakly though didn't let him go until a moment later. He let her stay close to his side as he took the pot to the stove and turned on the burner setting it down. It wasn't often they were able to do this, be calm and have a nice night in. The Doctor became restless easily, but even he liked to stay in with a hot cup of tea, a good book and his sweet little Timelady and take a break from the running and saving of worlds. It was tiring work, making sure the galaxy stayed in order and he and Ann were like the repair people, swooping in, stopping a villain here, restoring order there, everyday. He poured the bitter earl gray into two warm mugs holding one in each hand and carrying the honey Ann liked to add to sweeten the beverage in his mouth before she giggled and took it from him to ease his load. He enjoyed when he could make her laugh, it made everything seem a little less dark. He loved the cute way her nose wrinkled and her dimples appeared, laughing with her whole face. He walked to the door, hitting a few buttons on a pin pad beside the door so when it opened, it was a beautiful and comfortable living room with a soft sofa and and large fireplace whose warm glow illuminated the room. Walking over, carefully not to dribble tea on the casimir rug, he set the mugs down gently on coasters and picked up his book, stretching his long slender frame out on the couch as Ann crawled beside him. He carefully lifted one of his arms and rested it over her shoulder, pressed against his side as he opened the book clearing his throat and began to read aloud, "Call me Ismail.." he announced dramatically and she smiled, resting her head on his chest and listened to the soft crackle of the fire and his soothing voice. This was the time she loved most, when he read and she was able to simply forget everything, listening to the beating of his hearts, this was when she was truly happy.
