I was woken up in the middle of the night by my crying mother. 'It's time my darling you need to leave now.' I nodded in understanding and rushed out of bed. I picked up the bag that had been packed for weeks waiting for this moment. The moment I had hoped would never come and we rushed through the palace dodging the commotion avoiding all the main walkways.
The rebels well that's too nice of a word they were userpers and they were here and were ready to kill me to take my kingdom. My mother and father knew that this was a possibility. From the day I was born mers had conspired to take my throne because of my gender. I was not a male and my parents had refused to marry me off to some noble merman. My uncle Isaac was the leader of the rebels, a very traditional mer whose had it out for my father since they were young. My uncle wanted to be king and since he was the oldest it should have happened but my grandfather had a dream a vision he called it straight from the Moon Goddess and she warned him about what would happen if Isaac were to be king. My grandfather took this warning seriously so passed the kingship to my father. But the last straw was when my father refused to marry me off to my cousin Michael this would make Michael the future King and my Uncle the one pulling his strings.
I had been to busy thinking that I hadn't realised that we had swam to the secret passageway that Maku my personal guard and my father had made for my getaway. My father and Maku were there ready to help me escape. As soon as I saw my father I started to cry. I didn't want to say goodbye, but I knew that as long as my uncle Isaac was alive, I would have to live on land. I hugged my parent's goodbye and left through the passageway with Maku. I knew that my duty overruled my heart and so I left with my tears pouring down my face. We were about a mile away when I heard the bang. My parents had sealed the passageway so that no one would follow. I faltered for a second saying goodbye to my parents to my home for possibly a long time it took me a moment, but I gathered myself and kept swimming.
