Chapter 16
Ivy’s POV
18954, 18955, 18956.
I rolled over, groaning and looked at the clock. 2:16. I had been lying in bed since 10 and I couldn’t sleep. By 12:30, I had begun counting.
18957.
I closed my eyes and thought back to earlier. Michael and I had been having so much fun, laughing and asking each other questions, and I ruined it. Ever since I ran inside, my phone and been vibrating constantly with new messages, all from Michael. By the fifth message in less than an hour, I had thrown it across the room. I couldn’t talk to him, not after my mini panic attack at his question.
What is your biggest secret that you’ve never told anyone, not even your best friend?
Why did he have to ask that question? And why had I let it affect me so badly?!? I closed my eyes, sleep finally washing over me, as I let my mind wander into a restless sleep.
*Dream*
“I’m sorry, but there is nothing else we can do. We can get her on medicine, but she’s so young. Let’s just try physical activity for now, and later in life as it progresses, we can talk about medicine,” the doctor said, smiling sadly at my parents. My dad had his arm around my mom, who had silent tears rolling down her cheeks.
I was over on the side, playing with blocks, completely oblivious as to what the doctor was telling my parents.
“Thank you for so much time. We will see you next week, for an update,” the doctor said, standing. My parents followed suit as my dad stood and shook the doctors hand. My mom came over and picked me up, clutching me to her. I hugged her back, not sure why mom was hugging me so tightly.
“Mommy? What’s wrong?” I asked, looking at my mom’s face, tears rolling down her cheeks. My five year old mind couldn’t comprehend why my mother was crying.
“Nothing, baby, nothing,” she whispered, as we walked to the car.
*End Dream*
Jerking awake, I sat up in bed, my hair and clothes matted to my face with sweat. I became nauseous so I ran to the bathroom and dry heaved over the toilet. Slumping down onto the floor, I rested my hot cheek on the tile floor and closed my eyes, trying to catch my breath.
Mustering up enough strength, I pulled myself up and slowly made my way back to my bed. Sitting down on the edge, I looked at the clock, my heart sinking in my chest. 3:18. Growling in frustration, I got up and turned on the light, grabbing a book from my shelf.
I went over and sat on the floor next to my bed, and opened the book. I knew I wasn’t going to fall asleep so I might as well use the time until school wisely. As I sat on the floor, I could feel my eyes moving across the page back and forth, back and forth, but I couldn’t tell you one word I read. Slamming the book closed, I tossed it onto my bed and leaned my head back against the bed, closing my eyes.
Bzz. Bzz. Bzz.
I opened one eye and looked over in the direction of where I had thrown my phone earlier. I could see a blue cast on the wall from the screen. Sighing, I crawled over to the phone and picked it up. I hit messages and my mouth dropped open in shock.
