I ran until I reached the bottom of a cliff. A small stream of water tricked down the side of the rocks but other than that it was silent. I realized I was holding my breath and gasped for air.

Immediately the tears came. How could he do that to all those innocent people? I'm such a coward. I ran when I should've gone back for them.

I heard slow footsteps coming through the thick forest, crackling twigs and crunching leaves.

Shit. Diving behind some ferns, I peeked through the leaves and saw HIM appear.

"Blaine, I know you're in there." He was looking directly at me. "If it makes you feel better, most of your friends wont die."

I stayed silent still hoping he didn't actually know where I was.

He sighed, "look, I'm sorry I tricked you. It's my job. We keep the human population in check to avoid an uprising."

Was that supposed to make me feel better? I wanted to scream and hit his stupid handsome face.

"The ones that are in good condition will go to reservations or fight in the military with my people. They won't live underground in fear anymore!"

"What do you mean by 'good condition'?" I finally spoke.

"Between the ages of 15 and 40 with no health problems."

"So Sheila, that old bat, what's gonna happen to her? She's not the only one over 40 either. Most of them are."

He was quiet. "I can't tell you."

"They're gonna die aren't they." It wasn't a question. We both knew I was right.

I started sniffling. The tears that had stopped started up again. He rushed to where I was and wrapped his arms around me. I pushed to get him away but it was no use. He was far stronger than me.

The worst part was it was partly my fault. I trusted a random stranger I had met in the woods and it came to bite me in the ass.

"It's ok. You'll be okay. Trust me." Rowan was trying to comfort me.

"Trust you?" I asked, my voice breaking from crying "You're the whole reason this is happening! Trusting you just leads to people getting hurt, including me."

His grip loosened.

"You know, that was your one promise. You wouldn't hurt me. Fuck you."

When I said this he stood up.

"You're right. I'll leave you alone now." He started to walk away but stopped. "Sorry for everything, kid. I love you."

And with that, he was gone.

Short chapter, sorry.
Ya know, when I started this story I wasn't gonna make it such a huge downer, damn.
Oh well, I kinda dig it.
