Chapter 3

“I’m in” I relpied as I shook Coach's hand.

As I walked out the locker room my brain was on complete overload.

Me…the boys varsity team…with Jake… this was going to be a long season.

“DYLAN!!!!!!!!!!”

Only one person can be that happy at 7:45 in the morning.

Ryan.

Ryan Wilson

Age: 16

Grade:11th

Appearance: 5’4, big blue eyes, blonde curly hair, skinny mini!

Hobbies: Snowboarding, Theater, and Dance

Sports: The Falcon’s Dance Team

3 words to describe her: Loud, Crazy, And Honest

Ryan and I have been best friends since the womb. Being next door neighbors can really change a person. Since we were in diapers we have been attached at the hip. Wherever one went, the other was sure to follow.

Whenever we went to the park as kids, it was always the same routine… I would slowly walk and plop down on the swing set while Ryan would run around the playground introducing herself to everyone she saw in sight.

“Hi I’m Ryan, what’s your name? Wanna play together”

After surveying the whole playground she would determine which friends we would play with. Which one would be my friend and which would be hers.

Ryan was fearless. Ryan is fearless. Ryan is fearless so I can be fearful.

Ryan and I are polar opposites…the saying says that opposites attract, that was an understatement. Ryan and I are each other. We know everything about each other, from the scars we have, to the struggles we have dealt with, to even when we got our first visits from Mother Nature. I can easily say Ryan know everything about me…well almost everything. Not about Jake.

“Hey Ry! How was your morning?” I replied giggling to myself.

“It was fine. Jake was late, as usual! That boy seriously does not own a clock. I cannot believe he’s my twin. I swear we are so different!” She complained.

“But you love him anyways! You two are seriously inseparable. Yet every morning you make the same complaint. Admit it; you wouldn’t know what to do if Jake were to actually be on time for once.” I pointed out.

“You’re right.” Ryan replied defeated.

“Hey we still have to go to our lockers before homeroom and the bell is gonna ring in five minutes!” I said in a hurry.

“Ahh aren’t you so excited to see what our classes are! I am so glad summer is over so I can be social again. I need my talking time!”

“Come on already!” I said as I grabbed Ryan’s arm and pulled he down the hall to our lockers.

“So, how was soccer practice?” Ryan asked.

“Well Coach Perez came in this morning and told the team that the girls program is being cut because Coach Dana got married and ran away to Italy.”

“Are you serious! How could she bail on you guys? That is so not cool”

“I know, I was furious, but after everyone was dismissed Coach Perez called me back and asked me to be his starting left forward, playing for the boy’s team.” I said skipping over the part about no “love affairs”.

“The boy’s team!?! OMG DYLAN THAT’S AMAZING!!!!”

“Shhhh not so loud Ryan, I still haven’t told my teammates.” I scolded.

“Oh ok whoops sorry” Ryan said apologetically

“It’s ok, I just feel really bad that I am the only one who got asked to be on the team” I replied feeling guilty.

“You know what Dylan, that’s their loss. Coach Perez sees you as the better player so it is fair that he chooses you over them” Ryan stated matter of factly.

BRRRRRIIIIIIIINNNNNNGGGGGG

The bell signaling us to go to homeroom interrupted our conversation.

“I guess we should get to class.”

I arrived in Ms. Frink’s homeroom and took my seat next to Ryan I picked up my schedule for this year.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Period 0 – Boys Varsity Soccer- Perez

Period 1- Psychology- Mr. Harvey

Period 2- Statistics- Ms. Redding

Period 3- Kinesiology- Mr. Jameson

Period 4- AP English- Mr. Scott

Period 5- Choir- Ms. Taylor

Period 6- Drama- Mr. Lennon

As Ryan and I compared schedules we saw that the only two classes we didn’t have together were psychology and choir. Considering Ryan sounds like a dying cat when she sings, I think it’s a good thing we don’t have choir together.

We chatted for a few minutes about the upcoming year before the bell rang signaling the end of homeroom.

We parted ways and I turned to go to my locker to grab my books before heading down the crowded hallway to first period. Anxious without my other half I took a deep breath and opened the classroom door. As I looked around the room I saw that Mr. Harvey had created a seating chart and had posted it in the front of the room. I went to the board and found my name. I turned around and found my seat. I surveyed the room looking for some familiar faces. I found a few girls from my drama class and a few of my…former teammates. We chatted for a second until the bell rang and Mr. Harvey called the class to order. Just as he started to take role I heard the door open. I turned to see who it was.

Jake.

“Please take a seat Mr. Wilson. I do not approve of tardiness!” Mr. Harvey reprimanded.

And the only open seat was

right

next

me.

This was going to be a long year.
