“Under the Mango Tree”

(Short Story)

One day, there was a boy and a girl with a name of Michael and Kath who made a promise to each other that after 10 years they will come back in the same place where they first met, under the Mango tree. The family of the boy decided to migrate in the other country because of their business and the girl moved to the city to continue her studies.

Years passes by so fast  and the day of their promised came in, Kath waited patiently under the mango tree from morning until the sun goes down but there is no appearance of the boy. Kath continuously go to the same place every year hoping for Michael to come but after for consecutive years of waiting, the girl got tired and moved on.

After a year, she met John whose really persistent in making her to be his girl and because of his patience and untiring love for Kath they become a couple.

Kath is very happy in their relationship so she decided to introduce John to her family. Along the way to Kath’s province, John stop his car to a very familiar place for him and go near to the mango tree.

Kath asked him why he top in this place. The boy said “It amuses me, this place and this tree it’s very familiar to me. I always have these things in my dreams. I can’t believe this place really exists. ”

John sit in the bench under the tree, Kath followed him and also sit. He started to tell the story in his dreams “You know what Kath, I always have this dream of a little girl who I made a promise with under this tree” he pointed the tree “To come back after 10 years because we are about to migrate in the other country and she will move to the city to continue her studies.”

Kath was shocked because of what the boy said coz it’s the same story as she had before.

“One more thing, it all started after my operation.” John said.

Kath got confused “What do you mean, John?” she asked.

“Kath, I have to confess something to you before I have a problem in the heart I got this since I was a child. And when I was 19 years old, the doctor said that I need a heart transplant. My parents tried their best to find a heart donor and luckily they’ve got one from a boy named Michael, he’s a family friend.  ”

John continued “Her mother said that Michael is about to go back here in our country because of a girl that he made a promise with but on his way to the airport, he got to a car accident and sad to say he died. I think it’s his memory that I am dreaming. ”

John saw Kath crying so he asked “What’s wrong Kath?”

She looked at him and said “I was the girl in your dream, the reason why Michael wants to come back here.” 

John hug her and pat her back “It’s okay, at least he tried.”

Kath smile and stop crying “Your right John, he didn’t break his promise and came back under the mango tree, in you!”
