Arriving at the train station, Kyle and Adeline get out of the cart, and quickly start running South, making sure they don't get caught. They finished all their snacks and were off to find another gas station.
"Stop!" Adeline cried, "my leg, I need to stop." Kyle looked around; they were far enough, "How much money do we have left?" Adeline asked.Kyle dug through his pockets, and looked through his backpack, suddenly getting mad, he struck his fist at the first tree near him, cringing in pain, he dropped to the floor, trying hard not to scream.
Adeline just stared at him, "are you okay?! For goodness sake! Let me see?"
Kyle crawled over to her and showed her his hand, bruised and bleeding, "that's going to scar pretty well. Good job," Adeline laughed, "let me guess, you don't have the money?"
"It must have fell out of my pocket. I thought I zipped up my backpack all the way, but obviously not." Kyle said, anger in his voice.
"We'll figure something out." Adeline said, trying to get the positive out of the situation.
Kyle looked up and straight at Adeline, "I have an idea..."
"Okay, keep going."
"Follow me." They both stood up, Kyle, holding his hand up to his chest, he slightly grabbed Adeline's hand, and they both started to run, Adeline, as usual, followed Kyle.
They were running for about an hour, non-stop, Adeline's leg still hurting, and Kyle's wrist and hand still in pain. When they Finally made it to a gas station, Kyle took off his backpack, quickly took something out and put it in his pants pocket.
"Kyle, we just discussed how we have no money. Why are we here?"
Kyle looked at Adeline with worry, "just.. just follow my lead." And they walked inside.
"Grab a box on granola bars, 4 waters, and something else you want," Kyle said, "I'll grab some stuff over here."
Confused, Adeline grabbed the stuff, and met up with Kyle, where he grabbed 2 lighters, a rope, and a Hershey's bar. "Just follow my lead," Kyle said again and walked to the counter, where they both set there stuff down and the cashier scanned them.
"That will be $27.09." The cashier said, smiling at us.
"Here's the dilemma sir," Kyle looked at him straight in the eyes, "we're homeless, we have no money, and all we need is this stuff. We were going to take it, stuff it in our backpacks and run out, but that wouldn't be very nice, now would it? So, could you give us a break, and let us walk out of here with this stuff?"
Adeline just stood there, "I can't do that." The cashier says.
"You may want to let us." Kyle demanded.
"No. Pay or leave."
Kyle looked at Adeline, then back at the cashier, "I didn't want it to come to this," he whispered to Adeline. Kyle looked around, saw that no one was in there, grabbed the thing he put in his pocket out... It was a knife... He took it out, grabbed the cashier by the collar of his shirt, and put the knife up to his throat, "let us have this food or I will cut you."
Adeline became terrified, not as terrified as the cashier. The cashier just looked at Kyle, the guys sweat could've filled a pool, "okay, okay! Take it! Its yours!"
Kyle put the knife down, nodded a thank you, took the food and left, "why in the world did you do that?!" Adeline yelled while running, hearing sirens off in the distance.
"We needed it!" Kyle yelled, "we need to survive don't we?!"
Not saying anything, they ran in silence, letting the breeze hit them, and listening to the sirens and how close they were getting. As the wind painfully hit her, Adeline felt some peace, like this was a good life; it was fun, it was risky, it was dangerous, she started to laugh, a laugh she hasn't done in years.
