Rydel

My heart was beating into my ears as I storm into the hospital and there right in front of me sat a very distressed Ellington. I take a seat right beside him and he looks at me with tears in his eyes, his hair was everywhere as if he had ran his hands through it at least a million times already. I pull him into a hug. "What happened?" I whisper quietly and I hear a long sigh in response.

"It's my fault." Was all he says before tears roll down his cheeks. I hug him even tighter.

I want to push him to tell me more, but he doesn't seem in a good state. I have to just be here. For him.

We are broken together.

~
We sat in silence, wasn't an awkward one though. His eyes kept darting towards the doors every time they opened.

"It's one in the morning," he finally says. "You should go home, I'll be fine."

I shake my head and scoot my chair closer to his. "I'm staying and there's no thing that can't make me leave."

I see a twinkle in his eyes as I say that. His fingers run between mine and stay in touch. We soon turn into another silence.

My eyes start feeling heavy and I shake my head. I can't go to sleep. I have to be here for Ellington.

"The last time I was here was when my dad passed away." Ellington flashes back into reality. I sit up and look at him.

He's never told me about how his dad passed away. I just never thought he'd say anything. Especially since it seemed like a touchy subject to him.

"What happened?" My voice comes out in a whisper. He looks at me and bites his lip.

My heart skips a beat even though I know I shouldn't be focusing on his lip bite.

"He got in a car accident. Someone turned into the lane he was driving past and we never found out who the driver was. My mom didn't want to find out, she was scared of knowing who it was. She didn't want to hold a grudge." Ellington's words come out as if he was actually back in the hospital when his dad was here. I sit up straight and look at him curiously.

"What about you? What did you want?"

"I only found out the basics. The driver was a girl, around our age, with her friend. I guess their wreck was pretty bad too." He sighs and plays with his fingers. "I try not to think badly of them even though they killed my dad."

I squeeze his hand. "Well, at least you have your memories with him and pictures with him, right?" I only ask because in my family, we take pictures like no other.

Ellington gets his phone out of his pocket and it shines the clock as he turns it on. It's three in the morning.

I watch as he scrolls through his pictures and taps on one and gives it to me. "That day was when his truck broke down and he used that as a lesson of fixing work for me." He smiles at the memory.

I study the picture of a thirteen year old Ellington with his dad. Something familiar was striking me as I kept looking.

Did I know his dad?

No I never seen him in my life.

Did I see-

There's a million red Chevy trucks.

I gasped.

Red.

Chevy.

Truck.

I close my eyes upon a memory.

His eyes locked with mine in panic with a mixture of shock. His bright truck lights kept on shining as the world around him was crumbling to pieces.

It was my fault.
