The wooden door of my tiny room creaked open. Two wonderful eyes were peaking inside. The owner of those eyes was Samantha, although I called her "mom" for short.
"Rise and shine Lael, Toby is awake already," she looked back over her shoulder, "want to be bested in your classes or something?"
"As if," I muttered beneath the mattress.
It was hardly Toby could ever surpass me, after all I was considered one of the best of students nationwide. Yet I doubt I'd feel any different if I was the worst.
I managed to crawl out of bed, my eyes resisting the light shaft from the window.
School again, what a hassle. Someone kill me, I swear I won't sue.
I stood up and made way for the door, but a small thing got my attention. It was a crinkled paper projecting from a crack on the floor. I caught it with two fingers and blew the dust away with a whistle, it must've been there for quite some time. Most of it was somewhat erased, but I could make out the first two lines:
"I flied a kite"
"The sky didn't notice,"
There was also a signature at the back, I crossed my eyes on it, "Deriderius."
What a weird name.
I wedged the paper back into the crack like it belonged there, and roamed downstairs.
Our white kitchen was parted with an oakwood counter, and everything outside the kitchen was brown. There were no doors except for the one that had led to outside. A food covered table stood beside the counter.
"Come, you're late for breakfast as always, brother," called Toby through a mouthful of cheese.
Late? No, you're early, not to mention disgusting.
I sat opposite Toby, he has somewhat a round face, short brown hair, brown eyes and is a tad shorter than me.
I'm around six feet tall with black eyes and hair, not too long, not too short either.
We heard rapid footsteps, when the sounds shut, a girl appeared in front of the stairs, her name was Lia.
And so we started on our everyday breakfast.
I'm absolutely positive today will be no different. Food, school, home, sleep, and all over again, day after day. What a boring life.
Toby pierced my thoughts with a disturbing grin and removed a yellow ribbon from his pockets, "Looky here, ah, the smell of blonde hair, and, lilies is it, can you guess who?"
"Melanie," Lia spurted.
"Right you are Lia, it's the smell of a rich girl."
"Except that's a weird thing to say, much like you are," Lia glanced at Toby, it was her what-the-hell-are-you-talking-about look, "Jesus Christ," she exhaled.
I took a sip from my cup of joe, "pointless talk, how come you never get tired of it?"
"Oh yeah, and how come you're always tired?" Lia's brows furrowed at me.
"Lia, did you know, a man is murdered every sixty seconds, and a woman is raped every fifteen seconds." I was counting on the fact that she couldn't make fun of a serious thing like murdered people, she'd feel bad if she did. That's why she couldn't mock me, I'd win this round. I grinned.
