Mark p.o.v.
It was late, and getting dark out. I drove down the street, slowing as I came to an intersection. I rolled my eyes. This was the one that always took forever.
Mark: Oh come on! I almost made it! For fucks sake! I just needed to get some groceries goddammit!
I looked at the bags in the back and sighed. We'll I guess I'll be here for a little. I looked around the intersection a little. It really was a beautiful evening It was warm and you could still barely see the sun setting, and there was a cool breeze. Maybe today would be a good day to take Lindsey out to the park. I'll have to ask her about it when I get home. Jack and Signe went out for a big and wouldn't be back soon anyways. Then I looked in the seat next to me and saw a small box. I had been thinking recently about...things with Lindsey. And, well, I had been feeling out the situation for weeks now, asking the occasional odd question. And now, I had finally built up the courage to pop the question. I didn't know when I would do it exactly, but sometime this week for sure. Finally! There was a green light! I started moving, and looked back and forth as I slowly went into the intersection. But then, one car caught my eye. I looked through the windshield and saw...her. My eyes went wide. She had different glasses, of course, but it was definitely her. Phelba. Her eyes met mine, and to my surprise, she smiled and waved at me. I'm not sure why I was surprised. She had never been malicious, but definitely creepy.
I hope she doesn't see the license plate. Shit.
But as I was worried about the license plate, I saw her facial expression change from a happy one, to a scared one. I sent her a questioning look as she started trying to mouth something to me. I couldn't make out what she was saying. Then, looking almost a little desperate, she leaned out the window and screamed at me.
Phelba: Car!
I quickly turned around and was met with bright, white headlights before I felt pressure on all sides, glass piercing my skin, and saw nothing but black.Lindsey p.o.v.
I was sitting at home, watching the television. Mark had gone out to go get some groceries and such, and Jack and Signe had went for a date night in L.A. Maybe me and Mark should do that at some point. It would be fun. But as for tonight, I had a special surprise that I couldn't wait until he got home to give him. Just then, my thoughts were interrupted by my phone ringing.
Odd. Nobody usually calls me this late.
I picked it up and was met with an unfamiliar voice.
Man: Hello? Is this Miss Stirling?
Lindsey: Yes?
Man: Are you the significant other of Mark Fischbach?
Lindsey: Yes...?
I got more worried as he spoke.
Man: I'm sorry to tell you that...Mr. Fischbach was in an accident earlier this evening. It seems like he was hit by a drunk driver. At the moment, we have him at the hospital, but it isn't looking so good. You should come down as soon as possible.
Lindsey: Oh my god. I'm on my way.
I hung up and ran frantically throughout the house, looking for keys. But of course, Mark had them. I quickly called a cab, and made my way over to the hospital. When I got there, I rushed in and saw, to my surprise, a rather worried looking Phelba. I ran up to her.
Lindsey: Do you know where Mark is?
Phelba: He...he's...
She pointed towards the door leading to the hospital rooms.
Lindsey: What happened?
I was on the verge of tears now. I couldn't believe what was happening? Could she be responsible? No, the doctors said it was a drunk driver.
Phelba: He went into the intersection and saw me. He slowed down and then a...drunk man came out of no where and hit him. I'm sorry Lindsey...I'm so sorry. I tried to warn him, but...he couldn't hear me.
I felt bad for her. She seemed like she had been traumatized.
Lindsey: Do you know where he is? The man who hit him?
She pointed to a distressed looking man over in the corner. I started walking towards him, but before I got to him, a nurse called out.
Nurse: Mark Fischbach?
Me, Phelba, and the man all looked up as she walked over to us.
Nurse: I'm sorry to say, that it isn't looking too good for him. I'm so sorry. Do we have any family here?
Lindsey: I...I...
I couldn't handle this. This was not happening. It couldn't be. Not after everything...but it was.
Phelba: She's his girlfriend.
I was thankful she said something, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw the man look at me with tears in his eyes.
Nurse: Well then, are you Miss Stirling?
Lindsey: Yes.
Nurse: Oh, yes, he's been asking for you. The whole time he's been awake, he's been asking for a Lindsey. He'll be happy to see you. Come with me.
Then she led me through the door, and into the hallway.
Lindsey: So, what's wrong with him?
She looked at me sadly.
Nurse: He has a punctured lung, as well as many other organs, along with broken bones. But the lung is going to the the thing that...
She trailed off. I could tell she didn't want to say it to me.
Lindsey: ...kills him?
She nodded as tears started to make their way back into my eyes.
Lindsey: No...
Nurse: I'm so sorry. But at the moment, we have it under control to the point where he can speak.
We approached the room that I could only assume is his. She stopped me before I walked in.
Nurse: Don't be scared by the machines, they're what's keeping him alive. And try not to freak him out about it either. Unneeded stress, could cause more damage and more pain for him.
Lindsey: I understand.
Just the thought of him in pain and suffering brought the tears back, but I held them down. I would not let them escape. I can't let him be sad, he needs to be happy. He needs to be happy, before he...before he...
Then the nurse opened the door.Mark p.o.v.
I saw blinding lights, and everything was in slow motion. I saw the car colliding with my own, as the windshield shatter, many shards working their way through my skin. I felt the pressure from everything around me, closing in on me, crushing me. But then, it was all gone. And instead, it was replaced with white lights.
Was I dead?
I heard faint talking, and felt excruciating pain in my chest and abdomen. I couldn't be dead.
I knew there was only one thing, well person rather, that I needed right now.
Mark: Lindsey...
I wheezed out the words. It all felt like so much work.
Woman: Sir, it's okay. You were in an accident.
Mark: Lindsey...I need...Lindsey...
Woman: Is Lindsey you're wife?
Mark: N...yes...
Woman: Okay, we're calling her right now. What's her last name?
Mark: Stirling...she's my...emergency contact...
Woman: Okay, thank you sir. It's all going to be okay. She'll be here soon.
Mark: I...need her...Lindsey...
Woman: Sir, it's okay. She's on her way.
Mark: Please...
I cried out, nearly sobbing.
Mark: I need her...please don't take her away...
Woman: Nobody is taking her away. She's fine.
Mark: L...Lindsey...
Then the lights were all I saw.Lindsey p.o.v.
I stepped into the room and saw him laying there, with machines everywhere. One attached to his throat, pumping an unknown liquid into his body, another through his chest. It really was a hard sight to look at. He seemed so lifeless, but when he saw me, he reached out with a small smile.
Mark: L-Lindsey...
He wheezed out. I walked over as I nodded to him.
Lindsey: It's me, Mark. I'm here.
I sat beside him as he roughly grabbed my hand.
Mark: Don't...go...
Lindsey: I wouldn't even think about it.
It was obvious that he was in pain, and I couldn't stand it.
Mark: Lindsey...I'm going to die, aren't I?
I looked down. I couldn't look at him. I couldn't lie to him, but I didn't have the heart to tell him.
Mark: I'm going to die...
I just slowly nodded.
Mark: Lindsey, look at me...
I did as he asked, and now he had tears in his eyes.
Mark: I love you so much, and I...I want to do this now, before I loose the chance. He reaches next to him and pulls out a small box.
Mark: I know it means nothing now. There won't be a ceremony or anything, but I have to anyways.
Lindsey: Mark, it means everything...
Mark: Good. I'll keep this short because, well, my lungs aren't doing too great. But the long and short of it is, I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, which apparently is significantly shorter than I originally thought.
He laughed a little, with a slight grimace, as I tried my best to laugh with him.
Mark: You don't have to pretend to laugh. I know it's not funny. But, the question I wanted to ask you was...will you marry me Lindsey?
He opens the box to reveal a beautiful ring. The tears are getting harder to hold back now.
I nod furiously at him.
Lindsey: Of course, Mark. Of course.
He gently grabs my hand, and slips the ring on shakily.
Mark: Now, I know we can't actually get married. But I want you to know that if I could, I would give anything I have to marry you. But I guess life was just like, "fuck you Mark." But I want you to keep the ring, and remember me. Okay?
Lindsey: How could I ever forget?
Mark: Well, you never know. But, also, don't let me get in the way of your happiness. Find someone who will love you, no matter what. And keep chasing your dreams. Promise me?
Lindsey: I promise Mark. I promise.
I felt a few tears roll down my cheek.
Mark: Good, now please don't cry. Can you do one last thing for me?
Lindsey: Anything.
Mark: Can you let me kiss you?
I nod as I lean towards him, he extends his hand, cupping my face and pulling me in. I meet his soft lips with my own gently. I couldn't kiss him with as much passion as I would've liked, as that would be painful for him. So instead, the kiss was short and sweet. But it was enough. He pulled away slightly, and breathed against my lips.
Mark: I love you.
Lindsey: I love you too.
Then, before I could pull away and get a good look at his face, he pulled me tightly against him. My cheek fell against his, as I felt a few tears fall from his eyes.
Mark: I'm not ready, Lindsey... I'm not ready to leave.
Lindsey: I know. Shh...it'll be okay.
Mark: Lindsey? I'm scared.
Lindsey: You're going to be okay. You're going to be okay.
Mark: Okay, I believe you.
Lindsey: Good.
Mark: Lindsey?
Lindsey: Yeah?"I love you, so much."
"I love you too."And then, his arms loosened around me, as I felt his last warm breath against my cheeks, and his eyes fluttered shut. I moved my head to his chest, and heard nothing. He was gone.
A/N: So, you know when I told you guys that I didn't want to do a sort of "fairytale ending?" Yeah, sorry...
I am going to do an epilogue, so there's one more real chapter left before my little closing remarks. I howl you guys have enjoyed the story, right up until the end. Until next time...
