“Hi Lauren, nice to meet you,” I said casually. She seemed nice, and was really pretty.

“You too. Where are you from?” she asked.

“Miami, Florida.”

“No way, me too! Did you fly in this morning?”

“Yep! We must have been on the same flight,” I laughed.

"Yeah probably, I only got here twenty minutes ago."

Lauren continued unpacking and I had a quick look around the room to see what it contained. It was reasonably big, with three beds along one wall with a bedside table next to each of them. The opposite wall had a long desk built into it, with three chairs. The room also had a wardrobe with three doors on it, one for each of us, a chest of drawers and a bookshelf. Two of the beds just had a couple of pillows and a duvet folded neatly on them, and the bed closest to the door was already made up with white sheets and turquoise satin pillowcases and the table next to it was cluttered with belongings.

"I haven’t chosen a bed yet because I didn’t know which one you would want and I’m not fussed, so take your pick.” Lauren said, seeing me eyeing the beds, “I’m guessing the other one belongs to the other girl in this room,"

"Ok cool, do you mind if I take the bed in the corner?"

"No problem, I’m happy to have the middle one."

"Thanks. So who’s this other girl?" I asked while taking my sheets out of my suitcase.

"No clue. She wasn’t in here when I arrived," Lauren replied.

I made up my bed with my old white and green polka dot sheets and pillowcases. They weren’t exactly elegant, but they felt like home which was nice. I grabbed and extra blanket and my teddy and put them on the bed too.

Lauren and I had been unpacking our things for about an hour when we heard a knock on the door. Well, I heard it; Lauren still had her earphones in with the music up loud. I answered it to find that it was a lady who had come to show us around the school.

"Hi girls, how are you going so far with settling in to your room?"

"Great thanks," I reply with a smile.

"Good to hear. Now as you're both new students this year, I've come to take you on a tour of our school. I figured you would rather this than go on the tour with the overly-excited freshmen, am I correct?”

“Sounds great,” Lauren said. We went with her down the stairs and out of the dorm building. She showed us everything; there was a building with normal classrooms, a science block, art and technology rooms, a music and performing arts building, a huge gym, a field and a swimming pool. The school also had a large cafeteria, a dining hall, common rooms and various other buildings; there were literally too many to remember. The grounds were amazing, and the school was huge considering it only had about 400 students.

Eventually, our tour guide led us back to our room and told us when and where we had to be for dinner. We had an hour to spare, so we did some more unpacking and tidying up before heading down to the dining hall. It consisted of two massive rooms with extremely long tables, each seating about 30 people. Usually you could sit in whichever room you liked, we had been told, but for that night the freshmen and sophomores sat in one room and the juniors and seniors in the other, so that the teachers could make speeches to respective year groups. We found a table reserved for our grade and sat down in a couple of empty chairs. There was a babble of talk as everyone caught up with each other and talked about what they had done over summer.

“Thank god we’ve got each other to sit with, it seems like we’re the only ones who don’t know anybody,” Lauren said, and I nodded in agreement.

A balding man cleared his throat into the microphone on the makeshift stage, and the noise quietened to a murmur. He made a short speech to welcome everybody and then introduced to us to the principal, a tall woman with greying hair.

“Welcome back sophomores, and I welcome all new students to Woodhill Valley Academy. I hope you all had a very enjoyable summer, and are ready to get back to work this semester…”

Her speech went on for about five minutes, but I zoned out around the time I saw people starting to bring the food out on trays. I was starving, and I sure did love food. We were eventually allowed to start eating. Dinner was roast chicken and vegetables, and was actually really good. For dessert there was chocolate cake and ice-cream, and after eating my huge slice I was so full that I almost couldn’t move. Thankfully we weren’t on washing up duty, so we headed back to the dorm with the mob of other kids.

Once back in our room, Lauren and I changed into our pyjamas and got ready for bed. It was only 8pm, but we had nothing else to do and classes were to start the next day so we decided to just relax in our room for a while.

We’d been sitting on our beds talking for about five minutes when the door burst open, and a girl and guy stumbled in, too busy making out with each other to notice us sitting there. They fell onto the empty bed with their lips still locked, and Lauren coughed loudly to make them aware of our presence. They broke apart with a fright and looked over at us with confused expressions.

“Oh. I forgot I was getting new roommates,” the girl said.

“Sorry, hi, I’m Camila, and this is Lauren,” I said, trying to be friendly.

“Well I’m Ella, and this is my boyfriend Zayn,” she replied

“Hello,” Zayn said, who was British by the sound of his accent.

“Hi,” I said, trying to make the situation less awkward.”

“Yeah, well I better go, see you tomorrow El.”

And with that, he left.

“Sorry about that girls,” Ella said with a smirk. Lauren raised her eyebrows.

“Are guys allowed in the rooms?” I questioned.

“Yeah, but only until 8. That’s why we came in here now,” replied Ella.

“Well good thing he left, ‘cause it’s now ten past,” Lauren said.

Ella went to the bathroom, and Lauren and I continued our chat.

“What the fuck was that?” Lauren said.

“Yeah, hopefully she doesn’t ‘forget’ she has roommates again, because I’m sure this sort of thing happens a lot!” I laughed.

“Agreed, and I don’t really want random guys coming in unannounced while we’re in our PJ’s. Some of mine have bunnies on them I’m pretty sure.”

Our laughter stopped abruptly when Ella came back. I looked her up and down properly for the first time. She was average height, with dyed blonde hair (I could tell by her dark roots) and tanned skin. She had changed into pyjamas consisting of a tank top and boxer shorts.

“So, where are you from?” she asked us both.

“We’re actually both from Miami,” Lauren said.

“Oh cool. I’m from LA, so not too far from here, especially compared to some people. Zayn lives in Bradford, England.”

“Wow, some people here live so far away,” I said, which came out sounding really dumb

Ella laughed. “Yeah, I guess so.”

After talking for a while we finally climbed into our beds, said goodnight to each other and turned off the lights. Although I was still buzzing from all that had happened in the day, I fell asleep practically as soon as my head hit the pillow.
