My name is Freddy. Freddy Nelson. I live at St. Peter's Institution for the Mentally Ill and Insane. I don't know why I'm in the loony bin, but I've been in here as long as I remember. I don't have any "real" family, but my doctors are nice and so are the nurses. They treat me like I'm "normal". That is, until I mention my friends.
I told the nicest doctor, Dr. Susie, "I have a few friends in here with me." She asked me, "Here? In this room?" I replied, "Yup. One of them is behind you." I waved at my friend, Billy, and she turned around. "There's no one behind me, Freddy," she assured me. "Yes. There is. Billy wants to say, 'Hi.'" Dr. Susie walked out of the room with a concerned look on her face. Billy sat down next to me and said, "What's her problem?" I replied, "I don't know. She doesn't think you exist." Billy looked very concerned and said, "She thinks you are crazy, Freddy." I looked horrified at his accusation. "How dare you say that? She just can't see you! That's all," I yelled to my friend. "I'm sorry," Billy said remorsefully. "It's ok," I told my friend. "I can't stay mad at my only friend." Billy and I talked for a few more hours about random things until I had to go to bed.
