"Steve."Your voice was broken, but not quite as shattered as the man who was kneeling in front of the altar, broad shoulders shaking. For a man so large, he seemed so small right now, just another human against the rest of the world.
"I loved her, (Y/N). I loved her-God, I still do."
Your head bowed as tears made their way out of your eyes, forcing their path in red, swollen streaks. Steve looked absolutely devastated, that the only woman he had ever loved was now gone. You knew of his history, the tragedy behind Captain America, the face of America's hope during World War II. After all, your grandmother Peggy Carter had seen so much, and her experiences were told in tales to you during long winters.
"I can't ever hope to understand, Steve." You began carefully, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. "But I do know that wherever she is, Peggy, she would tell you to move on, to continue living."
Steve turned around, angry. "How can you expect me to do that? When I loved her-to just forget her?"
You offered a sad smile, unshaken by his outburst. "That's just the thing, Steve. You don't forget your loved ones, you treasure the memories that you made while they were alive. And someday," you voice faltered here, as the tears finally took over, sobs wracking your body. "Maybe you can see them again."
A warm, comforting arm wrapped its way around your shoulder as you began crying into his chest. "You really think so?" Steve whispered, words quiet as the two of you wept, wept for the incredible, unmatchable woman known as Peggy Carter.
Despite the sobs, your reply still made its way out of your mouth.
"Yes, Steve. I do."
