PLEASE READ MY NEW STORY: FATE, COINCIDENCE & TRIPLE AXELS AS I'VE ABANDONED THIS ONE!! x
The nurse was hurrying to the kitchen when she heard a cry. It was time for the afternoon feed, but, unable to leave the baby in distress, she headed back to the dorm that housed the young infants.
She peeped into one crib after the other, tucking in blankets, gently stroking those who were annoyed. She wished she could give each baby more of her time, but no-one lets her-there were too many babies to take care of, and the orphanage were understaffed.
She was about to leave to the kitchen when she spotted the corner crib, and couldn't resist a peek inside. This crib was slightly larger than the others, and it housed two little girls who were identical. Their fingers wrapped around each others, gently puffing and inhaling, side by side.
Marilla loved all the children in her care, but none other than these two. Her mum has died during birth in the hospital, and the babies father has ran away to the sea, many thinks he's now drowned. Marilla smiled at them lightly, but her smile faded as her gaze moved to the recently updated forms clipped on the hanging baskets.
Every infant had a chart, it contained important information such as the date of birth, current statues, parents' name if known. It also listed the child's adoptive parents if any, and this was the information that made the nurse's brows to cease.
Typed neatly in black ink, one twin was to be adopted by a single woman in Adelaide, Australia, the other seemed to be destined to become a part of the family in LA, USA. Marilla's heart went out for the unsuspected baby girls. They couldn't loose each other-it was already bad enough for them to loose their family.
Though not unexpected, Marilla was in shock when she came to work the next morning to find there was only one baby in the corner crib. The night nurse has reported the other baby has howled for the entire night, tears streaming down her face and now still drying sadly. Marilla told the boss of the orphanage to reconsider, but Helen told her that the decision was not hers to make.
"Twins are meant to be together!" Marilla protested, "it's the law!"
"Yes Marilla," Helen replied drily, "there're not enough British families to adopt, and there are so many childless families overseas, so decision was made. Maybe the agency feels it's unfair to neglect the overseas, instead of just the UK."
"But if the parents knew there were two, they could adopt them together-"
"Shush! Both of the babies will be loved and cared for. It's not my decision!"
Marilla sighed as she began her job, she piled the night nurse with information: "Did the American family came last night?"
The night nurse nodded: "They wanted to know all about the baby's parents."
"What did you tell them?"
"The parents' death, only the child's father has the Sea in him, and the mother was a violinist."
"You didn't mention her twin?"
"Why would I, Marilla? I'd loose my job!" The night nurse shook her head, "Bye, I'm going home now, need to rest."
Marilla watched silently as the night nurse left. She gave each one their feed and weekly weigh in. Very few were destined to remain in the country of birth. Some going to Brazil, some going to Europe, and another to Scotland. And one sweet little girl was destined to... Marilla's breath was caught in her throat as she coughed, she couldn't believe her eyes.
The girl was scheduled to leave for LA, USA. In fact, the couple were coming to get her the very next day. This might be ridiculous as it may seem, the girl were born the same date as the twins, a familiar weight and similar features.
Making sure no-one saw, Marilla quickly transferred the baby and put her in the corner crib, then she picked up the remaining twin, who was asleep.
"Good luck," Marilla whispered softer in her ear, "don't worry, you will soon travel too to LA, USA." She lightly kissed the baby's forehead, and laid her down gently in the crib. Now she went back to work, for she'd done all she could.
Now, only God will determine the future of the baby girls. But at least she'd given a right push to the right direction, and hopefully they'll meet in LA. For now, it carries on....
