Chapter 3 – Just Because
Sang's POV:
Think of him and he appears, huh? I never believed in that quote but I guess I do now.
"Um, hi." Oh gosh, that was so feeble. But I couldn't help it when I looked into those eyes. Oh my, they were entrancing. They had me trapped in one place. Those...fiery eyes. As if burning into my soul, they gazed into my own green orbs.
"Hello."
Oh now he had a soothing baritone voice also?! Ugh, not to mention he was wearing really nice clothes. All these great factors about him were not helping my heart! It felt like it was bursting with every beat.
I cleared my throat, taking a sip of my coffee. I was able to give Karen a good tip because I had a good paying job. This was the first time I was in here, though. I worked at a modeling gig. I told them a fake name and never let them take shots of my face. But I earned big heaps of money that way. I didn't need all of it and usually spent it on tips and charity, never clothes or toys. I felt uncomfortable buying those things. I felt as though I had enough already. It made me feel as though I were spoiling myself. I never got many clothes in childhood anyway. I was fine with little clothing.
"Karen told on me, didn't she?" I knew she would tell. I was kind of thankful, though. I really wanted to say "hi" to him but didn't have enough self-confidence and courage to do it. This really helped – him coming to me.
Fire Eyes merely nodded. He was still staring at me and to tell the truth, it was making me slightly uncomfortable. But in a good way somehow. I just couldn't explain it.
"Why'd you do it?"
I blinked up at him. He was taller than me. No surprise. I was really short. "Just because."
"No reason? But...you have to have a reason. I'm not someone you need to pay their needs for."
"I'm sorry if I offended you." I didn't see why he was so frustrated. All I did was pay for him. Was he offended, thinking that I thought he couldn't pay for himself?"
"You didn't it's just...no one's ever done that for me. Well, other than family of course."
I grew sad at this. I never had a good family. "Tell me something. What does a good family that cares about you feel like? I mean no offense to you, I'm just curious."
Fire Eyes clashed gazes with me, becoming the shocked one now. "I wouldn't know. What you're talking about is probably what it feels like to have a caring biological family. I wouldn't know that. I never had one of those. I have a different kind of family. The chosen kind."
I sucked in a breath. Was he a foster kid? Did his parents abuse him like mine did? "What do you mean by that?"
"Family is a choice."
But...blood ties still mattered, didn't they? They meant something, right? Even if they didn't treat you like you mattered, right? "Oh."
"You never really answered my question. Why'd you do it?"
"Oh yeah, just because I wanted to be nice I guess. There wasn't anything else I wanted to spend my money on anyway. I don't need anything so why wouldn't I pay for the customer behind me?"
Fire Eyes tilted his head at me. "You didn't have the best family did you?"
I shake my head. "No." I've never told that to anyone before so why was I opening up to a stranger?
"I didn't either. But I've got a new family now. A chosen one. Would you like one too?"
I blink. "That's possible? A new family? But what do you mean by 'chosen one'?"
"You get to choose who's in your family."
My mouth drops open. But...what about Mother? She was sick. She had cancer. I couldn't leave her behind. Nor Marie. Or Father. I grew up with them, and so I won't leave them. At least not now.
"I'm really sorry but...I can't abandon my family after I grew up with them. I can't just up and leave them. That's wrong. They may have caused me harm, but I couldn't do that to them."
"I understand."
I sipped my coffee in silence.
"Cookie?"
I glanced at the chocolate chip cookie Fire Eyes had in his hands. Was this a peace offering? He didn't need to. I wasn't mad or anything. I giggled and took it from him, smiling. "Thanks."
"What's your name?"
I grinned and sipped the last of my coffee. I stood up, slipping my bag onto my shoulder with my cookie in hand.
"Wouldn't you like to know?"
Victor's POV:
She's gone. And I have no way to contact her. If I researched her and got her number that way, I would seem like a creepy stalker.
"Seems like you and blondie there had an interesting conversation."
I looked up to see Karen looking where...she...left. I didn't even know her name. All I could do was call her "she" in my mind. I now understood Kota. He must have clicked with someone like her. "Yeah, she didn't tell me anything about herself." Except that she had a hard childhood like mine.
Karen laughed. "God, don't sound like you won't see ever her again. I'm sure she'll come back to the Café one day. After all, my coffee is irresistible."
