Chapter 3
After we ate almost all of the pizza the guys were sent home, leaving me with Mr. Blackbourne and Dr. Green. I could tell that they wanted to talk to me about everything that was going on but they also seemed to think today had reached its limit on drama. Dr. Green showed me where my room was while Mr. Blackbourne cleaned up the mess and took the boxes out to the garbage. I smiled at my bookshelf, filled with all of my books and my radio that was softly playing a piano piece.
"What will I do when we go back to school? Mr. Hendricks will call my dad if he knows what is going on," I said. I was scared to go back, I didn't want my dad to find out that I did not even change school and it was all a trick.
"You are not enrolled anymore, your dad sent an email saying that you would be moving and switching to a new school. So, you don't have to go to class with everyone else. We will have to find something for you to do though, I don't want you out on your own," Dr. Green said I couldn't believe what he was saying, no more Ashley Waters. I didn't want the guys to have to do it on their own though, I wanted to help them as much as I could and what help was I if I couldn't even attend classes.
"Don't look so worried, we will be fine," he said, reassuring me.
"But what can I do now?" I asked confused.
"You can be our eyes, keep an eye on the cameras and watch everyone. Make sure we are safe and no one is after us. You can sit out in our office with a pile of books and watch the camera feeds," Dr. Green said smiling. I nodded, I liked the idea that I would be able to watch out for them. Like I was the fly on the wall that I used to be able to be. Now I never was able to blend in enough to just observe, but if I was in the office I could watch everything and maybe put an end to all of this more quickly.
"I like that idea, but what if Hendricks sees me?" I ask. I would be going right past his office and there was no way no one would notice me.
"We will take care of that, you can go in disguise," Dr. Green said. I could tell he was having fun with this new set up and he looked like he was sizing me up for what color wig I should wear.
I could tell he was trying to keep the conversation light and fun, never hitting dangerous waters. We talked about what I would wear and how I should look to really fool everyone. We nearly settled on jeans, a baggy sweater and a red wig, but then Dr. Green said I should have a black wig and tight dress. Either way, I laughed each time he suggested something crazy like a clown costume. He even said I should just dress up as a princess and no one would know.
I liked that he was trying to keep me happy and my mind off of everything I knew they were going to ask me about in the morning. A family meeting was needed and I knew one was going to be coming soon. After the way the guys all acted at Victor's, I knew it was time for everyone to be in on what was going on. I needed to be the one to talk about it to everyone too, they needed to understand that it was what I wanted. I wanted to try, and I didn't want them to be mad at each other about any of it.
Mr. Blackbourne walked in when we had finished giggling about different disguises that I could use at the school. I sat up straight and gave him a small smile. He looked tired and I couldn't blame him, he had not been able to get much sleep with everything going on. He saw Dr. Green and I watched a flicker of sadness cross his features before he steeled them once more.
"Mr. Blackbourne, we were just talking about disguises that I could use. Do you have any ideas?" I asked, hoping to draw him in.
Dr. Green looked between us and then stretched and yawned, "I think I will be heading to bed now!" He jumped off the bed from next to me and walked out, but not before pushing Mr. Blackbourne into the room and shutting the door.
"What would you like to wear as a disguise, Sang?" Mr. Blackbourne said. He dropped his formal tone and he looked and sounded like his age.
"I don't know, I would have to really think about it. What would my relation to all of you be though if someone asks about me?" I asked. I was curious to know what he would say.
"Since you will be coming to school each day with me I think the most reasonable explanation is that you are my girlfriend, helping with security." Owen said. I blushed, thinking back to the golf course he had taken me out to and his claim then too.
"I think that sounds reasonable," I said.
Owen gave me his millimeter smile and walked over to me, he sat on the bed and lay back. I watched as he closed his eyes and loosened his tie, un-buttoning the first few buttons in his shirt as well. I was feeling brave so I leaned down and gave him a kiss next to the corner of his mouth. His eyes flew open in surprise, and I worried I had done something wrong. He moved his hand up and touched the side of his mouth where I kissed him. I pushed at my bottom lip and then he noticed what I was doing. He pulled my finger away and sat up.
He didn't look mad, just surprised that I had kissed him. He smiled a big smile at me and I was the one surprised then.
"Don't ever leave us, you are going to take all our hearts with you if you do," he said. He then leaned in and gave me a gentle kiss, a promise of more to come really. I was stunned, I had never really thought I would ever kiss him. Not with how serious he always was and how little he tended to show affection of any sort, but yet you could still see how much he cared in every little thing he did.
"I wouldn't dream of it," I finally replied. I knew I wasn't going to leave, someone would have to force me to and I would fight them with everything I had.
