Chapter 1 Chapter 1

The wind blew furiously as if trying to keep me from escaping. I fell rolling down the wooded hill cutting myself on the rocks. Managing to regain my footing, I continued running knowing that if I stopped, I wasn't going to have a second chance at escaping. Darrin was already close on my trail and wasn't going to let me go if he could help it.

I rushed towards the dirt road leading out of Silverton and seeing a carriage coming through I motioned for it to stop. Only one thought went through my mind. Run.

The door of the carriage slowly opened and I hopped in asking for them to go quickly. I looked and saw a handsome young boy with dark hair and bright green eyes with flecks of silver in them. His garb revealed him as a member of the royal family of the nearby kingdom of Hensville. I cursed silently, royalty only came here to visit other royals, which included Darrin- the prince himself.

The carriage bumped along the road towards the Grand Palace. I felt trapped moving back towards what I guess you could say was going to be my home. My hand in marriage had been promised to Darrin which had made his day. We had grown up together and as he aged I began to fear him, he hadn't been the same boy I knew growing up. He became like his father, cold blooded and uncaring.

“Who are you?” the young boy asked bringing me back to reality.

“Krystal Silvers” I responded without thinking, then clamped my mouth shut. My name was a well-known noble name that was almost as highly thought of as royalty. Higher than most people but not Darrin's family, they were considered the supreme rulers of all the connected lands, everybody went to them first before making any drastic decisions.

The boy raised his eyebrow in disbelief, “Prince Darrin’s fiancé? I can see why he likes you," he added, his eyes looking me up and down.
“What is that supposed to mean?” I sighed, so he did recognize me. “Yeah,” I said rubbing my head, “do you mind if I get out now ? I would prefer not to go to the palace.”
The young boy laughed, “Is that why your clothes are in that poor state? Why, were you running?”

I looked down at my dress which had been made of fine flink, a material smoother than silk and much more expensive and now it lay in tatters, but at least it still covered me. My cloak was filthy and had an unfixable tear in the left side. I sighed “I don’t exactly want to marry Darrin”, I replied. The boy looked at me with his green eyes as if I was a rare specimen, “You don’t want power, or money?”
“I already have that”, I explained wishing for the carriage to stop. “And no, I don’t care about that, I… I just want to get away.” I said, glancing at the palace walls that were getting closer and closer.

“Don’t you want to know my name?” The youth asked his eyes sparkling mischievously.

“Sure, whatever”, I responded really wanting to get out of the carriage more than anything. A group of palace soldiers called for the carriage to halt and of course the stupid driver had to obey, I thought to myself bitterly. Ducking, I hoped they wouldn't check the inside of the carriage, because there was nowhere to hide.

“Kiad”, he responded, “and I think they are looking for you. How much money would Darrin give to the person who found you?” he said thinking aloud I paled and tried harder to hide myself. Was he going to turn me in?
“Road check, we are looking for a missing person have you seen her? She is yay tall” one of the guards said estimating my height, “and…”

“And she is mine.” Darrin finished dismounting from his horse. “Krystal, get out of there. Did you really think you could run away from me? Not only do I have the power to make millions of people look for you but I also know you better than anyone." He opened the elegantly carved carriage door and out stretched his hand.

I cursed to myself. It was true he did know me better than anyone. He knew I would have been in the woods and I still think he put some sort of tracker on me because he always knew where I was without me telling him. I ignored his hand and jumped out making sure to land on his foot before stopping off.

Darrin didn't even grimace in pain; instead a smile emerged on his handsome face. “Wrong way Krystal,” he chuckled gently grabbing my arm and pulling me into him. “I already told you”, he whispered in my ear, “that I am never going to let you get away from me. I had my dad arrange a marriage with you for a reason.”

I shivered. Yes, I knew he always had an obsession with me but I hadn't realized that he was the one who made it so I was going to have to marry him. I had my suspicions but now they were a fact. I felt his hand gently caress my face, and his lips meet my neck. “Darrin stop, please” I asked wanting it to stop. I used to love him and partially still did but I didn't want to and he was just making it harder for me to hate him.

“Why? You are my wife.” Darrin said looking at me with his shinning silver eyes. One of his arms held me tightly up against him as if he was afraid I was going to disappear. I wanted to but sadly I couldn't.

“Not yet and I am hoping I never will be.” I hissed and struggled to get out of his embrace.

He laughed before easily turning me to face him, “Excuse me, but what happened to when we were young and…”

He didn't get to finish because I covered his mouth and said, “Don’t you ever speak of that, I was little and you fooled me.” I could feel Kiad’s eyes on me as if he was amused by this whole incident. When I was young and foolish one time when Darrin and I were playing near the lake, which was supposed to be off limits but we always visited it anyway. Darrin asked me if I loved him, immediately I responded yes thinking at the time that he was meaning as a friend. He had always been my best friend and the one I came to when something happened. After that he had asked if I would marry him, at first I was taken aback but he quickly altered my idea of what marriage was by saying that when you get married you promise to stay by the person’s side forever. In my childish mind that sounded like promising to remain friends for forever, so I had accepted not thinking of it again until we were older and I realized what he had actually meant when he had said that.

He laughed, “You were always easy to manipulate,” grabbing my hand he helped me onto his horse which I reluctantly mounted, not seeing any other option at the moment.

I could have sworn that Darrin made the ride bumpy on purpose. I held on tightly to his waist trying not to fall off. The sun was setting and so were my hopes of escaping. I fell asleep as we made our way to the castle.
