Why Me?

It was inhumane. The way we fought, the way it ended. There was carnage everywhere, fires at every corner, and screams of pain echoed through the trees. We fought like animals and humans. It was never supposed to end like this. We were supposed to win and they were supposed to join us. Never outnumber and defeat us.

I stared in disgust as the enemy prowled around, taunting the carcasses of my pack. My pack of losers. They let their guard down, and acted like selfish jerks. The sound of approaching footsteps was silent. As was the sound of my heartbeat. They might as well have killed me. They were willing to die to protect me, but they let me die. I turned, and my chestnut hair blew in the wind. Enemy or not, I hoped they would kill me. My orange eyes ablaze, I looked at the remainder of my friends. Trenton is my only friend, rather my beta. He stood on his two feet, his tennis shoes tied in nice bows. He had a pencil held firmly in his hand, and I could see his veins. His jet black hair was styled into a half Mohawk.

“Please, Karrie, change back.” He begged, and I wanted to die. The urgency in his voice made mad. But he looked pained through his skeye blue eyes. I gave up and changed, tugging on the hem of my dirty white tee. My jeans hugged my slim waist, but seemed too big. Maybe it was my deprivation of food that made me delirious. Maybe we won. But I looked. They had us surrounded. They might as well have stuck a knife through my back and stabbed my heart on the way out.

“We lost.” I gasped as he handed me a granola bar, opening it hungrily. I looked off to the side and saw a distant figure. A male wolf, a pale white wolf with deep brown eyes, had growled and snarled protectively. I couldn’t understand them, for I was no longer in my wolf form. He was fighting a female wolf, much smaller in height but much bigger in girth (google it). He looked at me, as he knew it was over, and I saw who it was. It was Kayle, my mate. I gasped as the female sunk her teeth into his furry neck and his eyes bulged. I saw him collapse into the mud, blood sinking from his neck. I heard him yelp and change into his human form, and I heard him murmur my name. “Karrie.” He moaned as his pale eyes rolled back into an endless slumber otherwise known as death in its presence. I gasped, and ran towards him, but the female grew protective of her next meal. I snarled at her and buried my fingers into his pale brown hair. My grey eyes crying, bawling even, and he wouldn’t wake up. His eyes were still open and they stared at me. They blinked.

“Kayle?” I groaned, stroking his face. He looked at me and analyzed my own face, the scratches, the scares, and the scrapes. His blue eyes still open, and lively.

“Kayle, don’t you dare die on me.” I urged, shaking him vigorously hoping to wake him. He may have died, but he still spoke. Rather, he still was breathing. My heart tore when I put my ear to his chest and heard nothing. But nothing changed. The female still watched her next meal, and I cried softly into his frozen chest. I wanted him to clothe me with his arms but he didn’t. I wanted him to tell me it is okay, but he didn’t. He just lay there, lifelessly. As I had experimented before on small animals and small children, I unwove my hands from hair, and waved them around his chest and lower body, just above though, never touching. My palms began to glow a snotty green, and so did his body; my powers were working. His lifeless body slowly lifted from the ground and the glow was brighter, and bigger. Just as the process was beginning, the female barked, disturbing my cool, and making his dead body fall into the murky grass, and him dying; continuing to leave me. I felt the warmth leave his body. The female barked a laugh and I went to her, rain beginning to fall. Mud splashed and my white skirt got dirty. I didn’t fret; I just looked at her with hatred. I then got so mad just by staring into her sepia eyes, that I went to her and pounded her with my fists. She didn’t move. I continued hitting her so forcefully that a human could easily fall, but she stood her ground. She didn’t agknowledge me as anything more than a parasite. She shook her head and ran away, leaving my face in a puddle. I watched her prance away, “Go! Get away from here!” I screamed. Nothing was going as planned.

“Karrie, please calm. He was slowing us down anyway.” Trent muttered, still at the rock where I was. He had seen the whole thing. I had never really learned my powers, so he saw me fail. I never learned the correct rules of society, so he heard me cuss, and scream, and yell. I wanted it to stop. He was jealous of Kayle. Ever since he kissed me last year, Trent has been all over me and I was sick of it. I wanted everything to go right for once and just go my way. I wanted Kayle to be back and kill Trent for his remark and be happy. I wanted everything to finally go my way. But nothing did. I never wanted to become Alpha. I never wanted to become a wolf, I never wanted any of this but no one cared.

Thunder roared as lighting lit up the sky. Being in Alaska, the temperature dropped very quickly. The sky was black with an aura radiation in the sky. It was the Aurora Borealis aka the northern lights. It was beautiful. The pastels and neons, and how they worked perfectly together. They made magnificent shapes that blended together. And one of them was a wolf. Actually, many were wolves. I looked up, and wiped my tears. One of the wolves howled at the pink moon, while another was on its hind legs (Like the cover.) Its nose was held high and its purple tail was bushy. The wolf began to move and it turned towards me. It howled at me, and then snarled. From the looks of the canine, it appeared to be my little sister, Mikkie. The fiend snarled and growled, and looked rabid. A rouge wolf was just what I needed. Just as the colours came down to bite me, snow began to fall, and soon a blizzard began. I screamed as hail fell too. I went to go get Kayle’s body, to prevent the enemy from taking him, but Trent said it is too dangerous. I tried to drag him, but I was going to freeze so I kissed his cold, blue lips and went on my way.

The cove in which my pack sleeps, is about five miles away. If we, I mean *I* (Trent has teleportation as his power), could make it there alive in this weather would be to change to my wolf form. I reluctantly changed, and realized, I had just lost the love of my life. My heart shattered and I stopped. I sat in the murky snow, and stared. My fur felt like it was freezing to the sticks and stones under the white powder. But it didn’t. It kust lay there, as Kayle did. If he was gone so would I. I lay down in the snow without a memory, without a trace. Kayle was my everything and not just my love. He was a best friend, a brother, a dad, everything I never had.

And losing him was the worst thing that could happen. I wanted him so badly, and losing him was the worst. Especially at the times when I need him most. As I drifted, I could see his perfect baby face and I yearned for it. But just as our lips touched in the bright white light, I felt my body being dragged away. The cold snow rubbed against my fur and made me growl unconsciously. I snarled and thrashed when I woke up next to a warm fire with my friends surrounding me.

“Let me die.” I barked, not understanding them. They shook their heads and I snarled. But nothing happened. They rubbed a warm blanket over my freezing body and rubbed. Why couldn’t they see how unhappy I was? Why couldn’t they let me die?

Because even though death tastes so sweet, even I know that no one deserves it. Not even I.
