Ginny walked downstairs and was once again disappointed. Harry was still there, grinning at her from underneath his mop of black hair, as was Hermione, sitting on Ron's lap. Mum was sniffing at the sink, trying hard to conceal the fact she was crying. And everyone else was there, too. Except for one. George. And, of course, Fred. But Fred was lost now, forever. In some ways, George was lost too, lost in his thoughts and silence. It was killing her, not being able to hear them joke, not being able to hear them laugh. It would be so quiet now, without Fred to make jokes with George. She doubted George would ever be the same again, he probably wouldn't smile the same again or laugh the same again. Every sound he made would be smothered in a layer of thick sadness.

Ginny sat down next to Harry and Mum instantly turned around, her eyes lit up. But as soon as she saw Ginny, her eyes became dark and filled with tears again. Without looking Ginny in the eye, she said "So, is George..." She didn't finish her sentence because she started sobbing again. Bill jumped up and put his arms around her, whispering comforting words into her ear. This wasn't fair. Mum was in tears. The whole family was in ruins. And Ginny was determined to put a stop to it.

She got up from the table, ignoring protests and questions from her family. She marched away from the kitchen, almost fuming at her selfish brother. She had to stop herself from thinking that though- it had been hard for her to lose Fred; she had to times that by hundreds and thousands in order to even comprehend how hard it had been for George. Poor, poor George.

She stopped at his door, her hand lingering for a moment, wondering if it would be wise to enter. But she shook her head. This had to be done. This had to be stopped. She rapped her knuckles on the door, and a muffled "go away" replied, a voice thick with tears and grief. She continued to push open the door, not caring about the response.

George sat on the floor, his face red and puffy from his tears, his hair messy from restless sleeps and his eyes were red and bloodshot. He was sat in the middle of a pile of books. Ginny knelt down near him, looking at all the books. She then whispered "How are you, Georgie?" He looked at her with big, mournful eyes, drowning her in sudden sadness. He looked away and started shuffling and sorting through the books. She couldn't bear to see him like this. "Georgie?" She repeated, her voice full of emotion now, her eyes brimming with tears. It was painful to sit in the same room as him, it made her heart ache. She wish she could make it all go away for him, to take the pain away.

Suddenly, something caught her eye. A symbol, one she was all too familiar with. George followed her gaze, and quickly tried to snatch the book away from her. Ginny grabbed the book and his hand and looked deep into his soft, brown eyes. "George," she whispered "You know you can't. No wizard can bring back the dead. You know the story, you know what happened to her. The dead don't belong among the living." He choked back a sob and looked at her, tears streaming down his face.

"You don't get it, Ginny!" He almost hissed at her through gritted teeth, "I want him back, I need him back! I can't live without him." He started to curl up in a ball, but Ginny put a finger under his chin and made him look up at her again.

"I do get it, Georgie. We all miss Freddie, obviously not like you, but we do. He wouldn't want you to do this. Look, he's with Lupin and Tonks now, and Lily and James will look after him. And Sirius too, he'll look out for him. And you have all of us." His face had no sign of hope, just misery. A sad chuckle escaped his lips, but nothing like his old brilliant laugh.

"No-one's like Freddie. Life is boring without him, not worth living-"

"-George, stop it, no-"

"-I don't mean that! I just miss him, I'm frightened without him, Ginny! Please, let me bring him back, I need him by my side again. That's all I want now, I want my brother back. I want my... my best friend back." Ginny was crying now. Hearing the hurt in his voice was too much. She wanted to give in to him, to let him find the Stone and let him bring back Fred. But it was wrong, and it would only hurt George more.

"George, think. If he comes back, he'll be silent. It won't be like old times. Just like the story, you'll want to die just to be with him truly. Do you want to do that to us? Well?" She was standing now, her voice raised. "Is that what you want George? He belongs in the spirit world but you don't, not yet! If you go too, the Weasleys will never smile again. You keep us together Georgie!" Tears were streaming down Ginny's face, rolling into her mouth. George sat there silent. She couldn't stand it any more, she had to get out of there. She turned on her heels and marched out again.

...

She entered the kitchen again, all the eyes on her, each with the same question. She shook her head sadly. She didn't want to talk, not now. An arm wrapped round her shoulders and squeezed her tight. Harry kissed her on the head and whispered "You did your-" But he didn't finish his sentence. He was staring at the doorway. Ginny followed his stare; her mouth fell open at the sight she saw, which then morphed into a wide grin. There in the doorway was George Weasley, his eyes moving from each person, each with the same expression on their face. And for the first time since the battle, his lips formed a beautiful, wonderful smile. He winked at Ginny and then said, "Come on, what does a man have to do to get a cuppa around here?" An eruption of laughter and tears came from everyone in the kitchen. Georgie was back, even if Freddie wasn't.
