Chloe POV
After school, Paige met me at the Old Oak tree and we walked home together.
"I saw Josh wearing those light wash jeans that you bought him today." Paige said, glancing at me.
"Really?" I asked, faking a surprised expression. Paige didn't buy it.
"Look, I know that you like him, but Maddie's with him, so I hate to say it, but you need to move on." Paige said, pausing. I kicked an acorn off the road. When I didn't object to her proposition, she continued, "Maybe you should consider going out with another guy..." She trailed off as though it were only a suggestion, but I knew that she wanted me to leave her brother to Maddie. I got that it was awkward to have your best friend dating your brother, so I didn't object.
"Maybe that's what I should do." I said, and idea coming to mind. I know he likes me and he knows I do too, and if he is only not asking me out because he's still with Maddie, then I'll just have to make him jealous. Sorry Paige, but I have to do this for love.
Paige looked satisfied. "Maybe you could date that guy, what was his name....Dustin?" Paige suggested.
"You mean that guy who asked me to the spring dance sophomore year?" I asked, remembering how he would buy me things to bribe me into going with him.
"Yeah that guy. And to think you almost said no." She joked.
I smiled, "Dustin really is cute," I said, reliving his warm smile, dark hair, and soft green eyes. I hadn't been attracted to him then, but now, I could see that he would work for my plan. After all, he was single. He had just broken up with his last girlfriend Angela.
"Yeah, you two would be perfect for each other." Paige looked happy that she had matched me up with another guy. She probably though she had quenched my love for Josh, but boy was she wrong.
I took deep breaths as I approached Dustin. He was standing at his locker, trading his Math books for his English. The Christmas Dance was coming up and it was girl's choice, so I thought why not ask Dustin to this? Paige was going with Landon and Josh was going with Maddie, so it seemed that everyone had a date already. I would have had one too, if I hadn't said no to the Captain of the football team, Toby. Dustin better say yes, otherwise I was going to have to go with Leuther, the captain of the Chess Club that has a record-winning losing streak.
I sighed and looked down at my outfit. I made sure that I was wearing my cutest outfit today so that he would be attracted. I was wearing a short, grey pleated skirt with black lace tights, a white cropped tank that said Los Angeles on it in black letters, and a flowy dark grey sweater that was open in the front. I had made sure everything was attractive, even down to my black heels.
"Hey Dustin," I said, smiling and batting my eyes.
"Hi Chloe," He said, his voice was low and sounded sexy without him even trying. I don't know why I even considered saying no to him when he asked me to the dance. He finished placing his Calculus books in his locker and looked at me.
"How are you?" I asked, thinking it was rude to right out ask him to go with me, especially since I haven't talked to him since the spring dance sophomore year.
"Don't pull that Chloe Lukaisiak," he said suddenly, catching me completely off guard.
"What do you mean?" I asked, a little defensively.
"You haven't talked to me since the spring dance of last year, and now you are batting your eyelashes at me? You obviously want something from me." Dustin said, smiling despite himself.
"Well, all I wanted was to go to the Christmas Dance with you." I said, pretending to be hurt.
"Hey," he said, putting a hand under my chin and lifting it up so that I was looking at him full in the face. "I'm not saying no, I'm just saying you don't know how to go about it inconspicuously." He looked into my eyes and leaned in.
I knew what was happening, and I freaked out so I said unromantically, "So will you go with me?" He stopped, his lips centimeters from mine.
"Of course my Chlobird," he said, and softly brushed my lips with his. They were warm and smooth. It was crazy how beautiful he was now compared to last year. Then he walked away, and suddenly I was very scared that I was now in a little over my head. What the heck did I just get myself into with Dustin?
"Hey Paigeymac!!! I got my date with Dustin!!!!" I called to her. She was standing at the Old Oak waiting for me.
"That's great Chloe!" Paige said, and then looked me up and down. "Chloe you do know that you kinda look like a slut?" Paige asked me, still looking at my short skirt. "What the heck, you weren't wearing that this morning!"
"Yeah, but I figured I would need all the help I could get with Dustin. You know--after I was so mean to him last year." I said.
"Okay, but if my mom were to see you like that..." Paige said, and unsure look on her face.
"Oh please, my mom would never let me wear this if she knew." I said. I had to walk out of the house wearing something else with my change of clothes in my bag. I changed in the bathroom at school before I asked Dustin to the dance. After that I never got the chance to change. "Trust me Paige, this is just for today, never wearing this outfit to school again." I said. "Cover me."
I walked behind the oak tree with my change of clothes and had Paige look out to see if anyone was coming. I quickly changed into a cute pink and light blue floral print romper with a white infinity scarf and light brown wedges. I came out from behind the tree and looked at Paige.
"Much better," she said, evidently relieved.
"Thank you," I said. And Paige proceeded to tell me about how Landon was asking her out on yet another date and it was on Friday night. I was happy for her but I couldn't help but worry about my own problems with guys. Will I ever have a happy ever after?
