Current Concern: Wants to be able to hit a sharper cross.
There he was, standing in all his might, volleyball in his hands, determination painted across his face. Most of his team took a break from practice to drink some water and relax a little, but Goshiki managed to make his fellow setter Shirabu to toss for him one more time.
He very much wanted to improve his crosses, and something told him that this 'one more toss' was all it took for him to finally get the hang of it. Everyone knew he was a master of straight spikes, being able to score even when he was inches away from the net.
Crosses, however, were another story. It's not like he didn't know how to spike them - which he did - he just wanted to be more confident and comfortable with them. Besides, if he wanted to become Shiratorizawa's ace next year, he had to make sure everything was on point and that he would lead the team to victory. He moved his fingers around the ball, ready to throw it to Shirabu.
Inhale, exhale—
"Are you going to throw that ball or what? I want a break too, y'know," the setter said, growing impatient with him.
"I was just about to do that!" Goshiki responded and threw the ball to the second year.
Shirabu tossed the ball and the wing spiker ran to where it was. He jumped up gracefully (or so he thought), and hit the ball with all he had. Usually, he would either place his hand a little bit too much to the side, too low or too high, but this time, he felt in his bones that this spike was perfect. It landed on the court with incredible speed, however it was still not quite as powerful as Ushijima's spikes (but to perform those you gotta be Ushijima and Ushijima only). It landed right where he wanted, if I may add, meaning it was a complete success.
Goshiki clenched his fist and grinned, proud of himself. He finally managed to spike something he was content with. Now that was a cool feeling!
He turned to his team, eyes glimmering and a light shade of red adorning his cheeks from excitement.
"GUYS, did you see that?!" he asked, looking at his teammates.
But, to his dismay, none of them were watching. A few of them looked at him and asked 'see what?' before returning to their conversation. Not even Shirabu saw that epic shot. In fact, he left as soon as the ball left his fingers. Why was life always so mean to him.
His smile and excitement faltered as quick as they came, seeing as his cool move went completely unnoticed by everyone.
He sighed and was just about to go for a drink of water when—
"Uwah! That was so awesome!" he heard someone yell from behind him. He turned around and faced you, looking up at him with your (e/c) eyes wide open and mouth slightly agape. You quickly shut it, only to open it after a few seconds, continuing with your small rant.
"Man, you've got some mad skills! You could kill someone with a spike like this! I've only seen Ushijima in action so far, but looks like he's got some serious competition. I mean, I guess, I'm not an expert, hah—"
"You really think that?!" he cut you off, grasping both of your hands and staring at you as he was fired up again, thanks to your words of encouragement and the fact that there was finally someone who didn't underestimate his skills, compared to Ushijima's.
"Uhh.. Yeah, I-I guess," you answered with a nervous laugh, looking away from his intense gaze. Your cheeks were dusted with bright pink at his sudden contact. Honestly, you just came here to retrieve your jacket which you left here during your P.E. You weren't expecting all this to happen. He continued to look you in the eyes, lost in thought. His calloused fingers still kept yours in a tight embrace, squeezing them ever so lightly. To be truthful, this might have been the first time you have ever held hands with a boy, and it wasn't quite how you expected it to happen. It wasn't bad, though. Actually, it felt pretty nice. ...Just not how you imagined it.
"So soft.." you heard him say, out of the blue.
Now this was awkward.
It was barely a whisper, but just enough for you to hear and, as a result, turn red as a tomato. You had no idea how to respond to that. Just a second ago you were thinking about perhaps intertwining fingers, and now this.
The two of you heard snickers somewhere behind, and you turned your head to see a bunch of other volleyball team members laughing at the two of you, saying something to eachother inbetween the snickers.
The noises his teammates were making made him come back to reality. He looked at your embarrassed, red face, and then your hands, still in his. Then it clicked. Realizing what he had just said and done, his cheeks turned a deep shade of red as he apologizedprofusely, letting go of your hands immediately.
"I'm so so sorry! That was weird.. I didn't mean to do that!! I just.. Got excited and.. Augh, please don't think of me as some creep!!"
"I-it's okay, don't worry about it," you chuckled at his stuttering. You tried to regain you composure and keep it cool, though the blush on your face made it much more difficult. You patted him twice on his shoulder and tried to shrug it off, but it came out as quite the opposite, as you gave him goosebumps when your hand touched his body.
Seriously, he was just being so adorable, getting all excited and embarrassed so easily. Not to mention his rather unique apologies. It was all so cute, you already gave a liking to him, even though you didn't even know his name.
The two of you stayed in an awkward silence for a while. Seeing that he was still extremely embarrassd and nervous, and also in the middle of practice, you decided to leave him be and calm down a little.
"Um, well, I came here to get my jacket back, so I guess I'll go do that.." you said as you turned around and started looking for it.
"It was nice meeting you... What's your name?"
"Goshiki Tsutomu!" he exclaimed, standing stiff as if he was in the army, and quickly added, "Likewise!"
"..Nice to meet you, Goshiki," he tried not to blush at the sound of his name coming from your lips. Keyword: tried.
"I'm (l/n) (f/n)," you took your jacket and headed to the exit. "See you around!" you waved and walked out of the gym. You didn't even realise your breath was unsteady and your heartrate was faster than usual. You wondered whether to approach him tomorrow, or rather when and what to say.
Your lessons and club activities have ended already, so you were about to head home. A smile graced your lips and the smallest hint of pink dusted your cheeks as your mind was repeating your little, bizarre encounter with the awkward-yet-cute raven-haired boy known as Goshiki, who might have kind of stolen your heart.
