I trudged onward through the streets, cars honking in every sense of direction, but I didn't pay any attention to that. I have been through these streets many times before, most of the time with Percy, since he knew the place so well, having lived in it for many years. But this time I was alone.
I ran a hand through my blond hair, letting out a huff. Today I just wanted to be away from all my responsibilities, just wanted to be alone. I continued walking on the sidewalk, occasionally moving to the side for others to make way. There weren't much people out this early. Sure, in other places this would be considered extremely crowded, but you get used to it after a while.
I walked pass a few blocks, trying to find something worth my while, when I turned the corner and came to a screeching stop. I stared at what lay before me, and couldn't help but feel as if it was staring back.
A perfectly rectangular red brick sat in the corner of the road, pressed against the wall. I felt some sort of pull toward it, as if I needed it. Not in some ownership, but as if we belonged together. I stepped closer and slowly reached out to take it. I picked it up and pulled it toward me, inspecting every single detail.
The smooth surface glittered in the sun. I ran my finger over it, taking in a sharp breath. No crack were visible in its elegant form, as if all the effort in the world was put into it, trying to make it perfect. If so, it didn't fail.
I pressed it against my chest and closed my eyes, taking in the feeling of it. I didn't care how crazy I may have looked, all I cared about was my beloved brick.
I reopened my eyes, wanting more of the figure in front of me. I traced my hand over it again, but with more love, as if I was sure it loved me back. I rested my face against it, the cool of it spreading all over me.
After a few minutes in this position. I finally pulled away. I walked over to a bench in the nearby park, gripping onto the brick, as though it could leave me any moment now. I sat on one side of the bench, and placed the brick onto my lap. It settled neatly on me, as if we were made for each other. I gazed at it with loving eyes. I knew what I felt, and knew what I wanted.
I wanted to live the rest of my life with the brick, get married, and have kids. If not, then I at least wanted to spend every last second with it.
I fell in love with a brick. And I was never gonna go back.
