I sat at my desk quietly focusing on the book in my hands. It was an old tale about a young man and his rise to the throne. I would say I was about half way through the book and really enjoying it.
However, my reading session didn't last for long until I came across an interruption. A rather loud clashing sound roared through the entire house. I slammed down the book and took to the stairs immediately. As soon as I came down the stairs I followed my ears to the sound of the disturbance. My search led me to the kitchen.
I peeked around the corner, careful not to put myself in imminent danger. I saw swords clashing at each other. The sight made my heart race. It was terrifying to try to look at the men holding the swords. But I forced myself. As I darted my eyes to the left the first man I saw was my dad. It was just as I had feared. But the other man was not somebody I recognized. In terms of looks he was my dads opposite.
My dad was a man with a warm and compassionate face. But this man, he could be mistaken for a soldier of evil. Somehow his eyes told me this wasn't his first fight and he had no problems with killing. I anxiously watched, hidden, knowing that nobody could sense my presence. I felt that I should do something but I had no idea what it is I should be doing.
I turned my eyes back over to the ensuing fight. Suddenly I saw my dad fall down and the other man held the sword up to his face waving it around in a threatening manner. As a young girl I lacked a bit of foresight. I ran from the space I was hiding at and lunged at the threatening man.
I tried to grab a hold of the sword from the man but it was no use. Naturally he was much stronger than me. Suddenly, he threw the sword to the ground and attacked me. As he pinned me down with his nails digging in to my wrists, I felt a fear never before experienced.
He looked at me with menacing eyes. His eyes felt almost empty as if he had given up his soul. The man spit into my face. He propped himself up grabbing his sword that he had flung to the ground earlier.
He attached it to his side and gave the death stare to the both of us. My mother was in the background of all of this silently crying.
" Little girl. Listen well right now. I wont be giving you a second explanation", he screeched.
At this point he had my full attention.
" Your dad owes me quite a bit of money. You want to know who's responsible for this lovely abode you're in right now? You're looking at him."
A wave of confusion washed over me.
" I gave your dad a beyond generous loan with the condition he would pay me back. He promised and swore he would pay the money back. So I obliged. But the time is up and I haven't received a portion of my payment back. You know in a land like ours how much money is worth. I'm afraid I cant let this slide by. If I cant get my payment I'll have to come back to apprehend him.
" And then..what?" I said meekly.
"And then have him publicly executed."
My heart started to beat so intensely and I felt the sweat collecting over my face and the tears welling up in my eyes.
"Wait!," I exclaimed.
"What is it? Little girl."
" I- I can make the money'.
The man let out a long roar of laughter.
"So you are personally saying you will take responsibility if I don't receive my payment?"
"Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying."
" Very well, little girl. But this is a decision you will regret when I come back for you."
