-7:00am-
I wake up to the sound of my Hello Kitty alarm clock ringing.., waking me up to my first day in an English high school. As I rub my eyes, I turn the clock of as fast as I can so as not to wake up Dad. I flopped back down onto my bed, staring at the ceiling. This is it, I think to myself, my first day at a new school, with new people. I had a thousand questions running around in my mind. What was I too wear? Will I make any friends? What if the work is too hard? What if no-one likes me? I shake this off for the time being and climb out of bed with a sigh. I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I look a right sight. My eyes were all red and puffy from crying, not to mention the dark circles under my eyes which made me look like a panda. Slipping on my purple furry slippers, I silently padded to the bathroom and washed my face with ice cold water. I searched for my toothbrush in the cupboard and found it behind Dad's shaving stuff. I spent an extra 5 minutes on my teeth, making sure I had no gunk on them from yesterday's take-away. I forced my mouth into a small grin, urging myself to be brave for the day.
Now I was in a real pickle..I had no clue what to wear. Back home in America, you could wear whatever you fancied, but over here there was a strict uniform code. Dad didn't have the time to buy the uniform but he promised he would have it for me after I got home. I flicked through my wardrobe, tossing clothes that were a big no-no. Finally, I settled for my baggy grey jumper that my Nan had knitted for me and a black knee length skirt, with tights. I looked at myself in the mirror...it didnt look too bad. I breathed a sigh of relief and started on my hair, combing it gently and making sure I got all the tangles out. After this, I slipped on my battered plimsoles and headed for the stairs.
As I approached the landing, I bumped into Dad. He looked a mess...his hair was all over the place, clearly showing that he had been running his fingers through it the entire night. He looked like he needed a good shave, but he still managed to put on a smile for me.
"Hello love, excited for the first day at school?" He asked, as he pulled me into a quick hug.
I could only manage a small mumble. I didn't want Dad to worry about me when he had enough on his plate.
"I bet you'll love it there love, you watch, everyone will be queuing up to be your friend!" Dad said, his eye's shining with excitement.
Oh Dad. He had no clue about the way high school worked. And anyway, who would want to be friends with me anyway? All this talk was too overwhelming for me. "I'm going to be late Dad, see you later," I croaked and ran down the stairs, grabbing my bag from the floor. Before Dad could say anything, I was out the door.
I knew which way to go, Dad took me for a little tour around the area yesterday, pointing out buildings and historical figurements. When we finally arrived at the school, I couldn't hide my suprisement. The school was a big, grey building with dirty windows and on the walls, there was graffati scrawled onto it. Someone had clearing been trying to scrape it off but you could still read what it said. I was gobsmacked. In America, when I read books about English schools, there were tales of beautiful grand buildings that looked welcoming, posh British schoolkids talking in a posh accent. Boy was I wrong.
