WE’RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE

“Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.”

      ― L. Frank Baum

I wake up early Wednesday morning. my nerves flying all over the place. I really want to make a good first impression and I have no idea what to do, or what to expect. Rayne took me shopping last night after dinner as our 'sister bonding moment'. Really, all she did was hand me clothes and judge me when I tried to pick out something I like.

The end of the night was a little too eccentric for my liking. Rayne and I were flogged by a group of paparazzi who shouted and pointed their cameras in our faces, blinding us.

"Rayne! How does it feel to know that you have a new sibling?" They would ask her over and over again, only having her ignore them and push past them to the car. Then they would turn to me, shoving their cameras in my face and shouting over each other to get their statements in.

"Natalia! You're parents told us about you today, did you just find out as well? Where have you been for eighteen years? Why do you think you're back now?" They rambled on and I just stood there, my eyes wide and mouth hanging open in shock. I wasn't expecting it, I wasn't thinking, and it was a little too much for my liking.

I guess I'll have to get used to it. I think to myself as I recount the night last night. I sleepily walk to my closet and search through the bags I brought home from my shopping trip and pull out on of the dresses I bought. I strip and pull the tight fitting black dress over my head and pair it with some white strappy sandals. I clasp a simple necklace around my neck and it hangs loosely at the base of my throat and I make my way to the bathroom, pulling out my curling iron and turning it on.

While it heats up, I pull out my makeup kit and apply some light makeup to cover my dark rings, and line my eyes with dark eyeliner to accentuate my eyes. I curl my hair, forming loose waves and put on some final touches before checking myself over in the mirror and leaving to head downstairs for breakfast.

I knock on a door and cross my fingers in hope I've chosen the right door. My smile fades when Rayne opens the door, and she sighs, rolling her eyes.

"Oh," I mumble, "I was looking for Atala's room." I confess as she nods her head towards Atala's room. I turn as Rayne slams the door behind me and I flinch at the loud bang. I stand in front of Atala's door and knock and sigh with relief when she opens it.

"Nattie!" She screams with delight, and I smile. "Come on," she says grabbing my hand and pulling me to the staircase. "I'm starving." She admits as I follow her downstairs to the dining area. Suddenly a vast amount of smells hits my nostrils and my mouth waters.

Lined in the middle of the table is a buffet of breakfast foods. There's anything from scrambled eggs and omelettes, to Eggs-Benedict, pancakes, and French Toast. Rye, whole wheat, and white bread and your choice of bacon, sausage or steak as a side. On large wine tray, four glasses are displayed and I have my choice of apple or orange juice.

Are we having breakfast with the whole neighbourhood?

I look to the corner of the room and my eyes catch Fiona's, and she smiles at me and gestures for me to dig in. I feel a jab in my side and I look to my side and realize Atala is staring at me. "What?" I ask her, a little self-conscious as my body folds in on itself.
