Chapter Three

The Forest of Larutanrepus

"How are we going to get home now?!" Alexa said like it was the end of the world. She was pacing up and down and up and down and Emma was starting to get a bit seasick from it. Emma thought Alexa was overreacting just a tiny bit. After all, they were just lost in a really big forest with no idea where they were or how to get home, and it was almost sundown. The only thing she was worrying about at that moment was that she might not be able to finish her homework in time for school tomorrow if Alexa keeped this whole pacing thing up. "We could walk in a straight line until we come to the edge of the forest." Emma suggested. To her that was the obvious answer. She was always good at coming up with stuff, especially in high pressured situations. Alexa was good at panicking. Alexa looked at Emma for just a moment too long and accidentally walked into a tree.

As the two girls walked on and on they were silent. They were listening for sounds of traffic or other people. Nothing. "It's like this forest never ends!" Alexa said, speaking Emma's thoughts.
"What does Larutanrepus mean anyway?" Emma said after a long period of silent walking and listening.  "No clue." Alexa answered after thinking about it and realizing that it was a good question. They kept walking in one direction for what seemed like hours. The sun was getting lower and lower in the sky the farther they walked.  The whole thing was starting to feel hopeless. They sat down on a rock they found and thought.
What if this forest never ends! Thought Emma  What if we never get home! Alexa thought. "Don't think about that!" Emma said, mostly to herself. They both forced themselves not to. They sat in silence and waited for nothing in particular but waited all the same. The minutes ticked by. Then, out of nowhere, Emma burst out laughing. "What?" Alexa asked curiously. "Nothing. I can make myself laugh if I want to. And I thought it was getting too quiet." Emma replied cooly. At this it was hard for Alexa to keep a straight face and burst out laughing with Emma, who had started again.
As the sun went down, they found a nice space to lie down and tried to get comfortable. It was really hard to go to sleep after the day's events.  It was at that moment that Emma remembered the blanket in her backpack because they had just had their school play and the teachers asked her to bring in her blanket. After they got the blanket out the whole thing was a lot more comfortable.

It was almost spring but it felt like summer had come early. It was so warm that the two girls woke up sweating. They pulled the blanket off them and looked around. That's when the events from the previous day came flooding back to them like a tsunami. Alexa jumped up and continued to pace. OMG, does this girl ever stop pacing!? Emma wondered. "What did you say?" Alexa asked as she looked at Emma just a moment too long. And walked into a tree. Again.
"Woops! Did I say that outloud?" Emma said looking startled.
"Yes."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure you're sure?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure you're sure you're sure?"
"Yes."
And it went on like that until:
"Are you sure you're sure you're sure you're sure you're sure you're sure you're sure you're-"
"YES" Alexa practically blew down all the trees in Lartenrepus as she shouted at Emma.
"Really?!" Said Emma in mock surprise.
"Yes! Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes and... YES!" Alexa had bellowed the last word. "Oh." Said Emma simply. Alexa did a facepalm and muttered under her breath "Potato."
Alexa suddenly looked at Emma, bewildered. "What did I do wrong?" Emma asked nervously. "Nothing." Alexa said in a very high voice that was not her own. "I just realized that I really need to go to a bathroom." Said Alexa still in the voice that was not her own. "Just go anywhere." Emma shrugged.  "Is that even legal?" Alexa asked, back in her own voice. "Well if it's not I have a good court case to argue. It was an emergency and I think it's kinda okay to break the law if it's an emergency." Emma answered smoothly.  "What's the emergency?' Alexa asked and Emma answered "When you have to go to a bathroom really bad you say 'it's an emergency!' right?" Alexa just rolled her eyes and said "This serious. It's no time for all your jokes. Where's the nearest bathroom?" in the high voice again. Then she remembered the  whole conversation they had just had. "Right." she muttered and walked in a deliberately straight line so she could get back to Emma.
When Alexa came back she was covered from head to toe with mud.
"What happened to you?" Emma asked as Alexa wiped some mud from her face. "I might have, just maybe I found a pond. Lets just say that." Alexa said in a defeated voice. "How did you find it? By falling in it?" Emma Said, answering her own question. "Maybe?" Alexa said, even though it was not a question. It almost sounded like she was asking herself.  Then Alexa said "I was walking very straight so I would not lose you, then I just fell into a big pile of mud. The mud was all around the edge of a big lake. Next to me, on both sides and behind me were packets of dry ground. I just happened to fall in the middle was a whole lot of mud."
"Let's go and get you cleaned off." Emma said picking up a stick to mark their path and putting their backpacks on a rock they had found earlier.
When they came back Alexa was clean. This went surprisingly fast and Alexa was already almost dry. This was surprising because Alexa had practically gone swimming in that river. They picked up their backpacks and found that they were a lot heavier than they were when they had left to Alexa cleaned off. This did not worry them for they were very tired and thought it was just because of that.
That evening, they opened their backpack to see what food they had for they were very hungry. When they opened their backpacks, they found them fill to the brim with food! Though, in Alexa's there was a little doll. This puzzled her because she did not recognize the doll at all.
They ate as much as they could, and more. Then they got out the blanket that was still in Emma's backpack from the previous night. They slept better the second night for they had already got through one full day and one full night!
When they got up in the morning, they saw new close, fresh and clean and waiting for them to be put on.
