Prologue

Lillie-Anne And Josephine

A light snow fell down as a young orphan girl, seemingly around the age of thirteen ran swiftly through the crowded streets of Gotham City. Yelling and several threats could be heard as the girl ducked underneath someone's arms. Her own arms held many foods. Breads, fruits, and vegetables, though not much. Her breath was labored from running at such a quick pace.

"Get back here, you little brat!" A shop-owner yelled after the child. The girl glanced behind her, though not daring to turn her head completely as her dark brown, blonde tipped hair danced in the wind. She ignored the baffling curses escaping the man's lips as she continued to run.

She soon slowed and entered an alley. A life risking mistake to do in this city, though she was completely used to the thought. She pressed against the cold wall and held her breath, relieved the man ran past, barely even taking the time to glance into the alley. Once the man was far out of sight, the thirteen year old let out a much needed sigh and slunk to the ground, her racing heart soon returning to its ordinary pace.

'Not something I like to do, but it's needed for my survival. Our survival." The girl thought, images of her little sister entering her mind. Her younger sister, Josephine, was eight, and had fallen ill. The concerned girl shook her head, clearing her thoughts as she stood. She had to get home, or at least, the shack just outside of town. The shack, a still dangerous place to call home, but there was less crime in that area. This shack was closer to the docks and well, mostly unused.

The girl shook her head once again, exiting the alley, and making her way home just as swiftly as she had stolen the goods she held. She wanted to check up on her ill sister as soon as she could. When she arrived, she entered the shack and placed the goods onto a makeshift table.

"Lillie-Anne?" A soft, quiet voice asked. Josephine.

"I'm here, Josephine." The girl, Lillie replied.

"I'm glad." Josephine sighed in relief. Her quiet footsteps sounded and stepped into the room, where Lillie-Anne was. A brief, concerned smile parted Lillie's lips as she turned on her heel to face the younger child. Josephine had become blind from her illness, so she wore a white bandana over her eyes. But when she was able to see in the past, her eyes were the prettiest dark green that always sparkled in wonder. Her hair was light brown and pale-tipped. Similar to Lillie's, only Josephine's was pixie cut. Josephine's body was frail and small, especially for an eight year old.

Josephine stumbled, and Lillie was there just in time to catch her. Lillie aided her sibling in standing, whilst leading her to the table that held the short amount of food that Lillie had stolen earlier.

"So, what did you get?" Josephine's quiet voice questioned. Lillie shifted just enough to pick up a few items, but yet, keeping a firm, comforting hand on her blind sister's shoulder. A pang tore at her chest as Lillie thought of Josephine's helplessness. Lillie bit her tongue and for the time being, shunned the thought.

"Some tomatoes, a potato, three apples, four pears, a thing of celery, and a loaf of bread," Lillie responded. "We have a couple of oranges left. So you...want anything?" She inquired, quite hesitantly.

"I can't," Josephine started with a regretful sigh. "You need it more than I do. Y-you...need to keep living." Lillie let her eyes travel down to the young girl. She glanced from Josephine to her own hands. She had abilities. Unnatural...abilities. Healing. Lillie exhaled a sigh and closed her eyes for several moments, unwilling to see either of the room or her ill sister.

"I just wish," She began, her voice just barely croaking out the words. "I just wish my powers were enough to heal you." The dark haired girl breathed out.

"No, it's alright. You've done enough Lillie-Anne," The blind girl felt for Lillie's hand, and held it tightly when found. Lillie opened her eyes at the new found warmth of Josephine's frail palm. "You've done enough. Even when you had to steal, you always made sure I was fed, you've helped me enough. Enough just to where I'm alive and able to spend every moment with you," Lillie smiled as she continued to speak. "You've always kept me safe. Even when it came to strangers harming us. You got shot even then." Josephine paused several seconds before adding in last, "I'm able to walk because of you. I mean, sure I may have lost my sight, but you've done so, so much more than I could ever ask for..."

"I'm sorry it's not enough." Lillie sighed, an overwhelming sorrow filling her as she squeezed Josephine's small hand.

"It's more than enough. You dropped out of school for me!" Josephine protested. Lillie's lips pulled into a thin line as she lowered slightly, pulling her blind, eight year old sister into her embrace.

"I-I just wish there was something more I could do for you...I will make sure there is a better future for us. For you, Josephine."

"I know..." The younger of the two replied. She let her older sister embrace her. Somehow, Lillie was going to make it better for them. Even if she had to fight for it.
