Chapter 1:

The Party

I brushed my long dark curly hair slowly. Finally i just threw it up in a messy bun, letting a few missed strands all into my face. The dark blue tank top was light, too light for winter, so I threw a small cardigan over it. I rushed out the door, carrying my large suitcase in my hand, when I heard my boyfriend's car horn honk. I raced down the carpeted stairs, taking two at a time. I smiled when I saw him through the open passenger's side window. His bright green eyes sparkled with exccitment, and his dark hair hung into them. "You ready?" He asked from the drivers seat. "Yeah." I said smiling.I threw my bag into the backseat, right next to his, then slid into the warm black leather seat and slowly turned to look at him. I leaned over, gently placing my hand on his chin and pulled his face over to mine. When his lips finally met mine, my skin tingled and he brushed my black hair from my face. I smiled at him. "Your so beautiful." He murmured lightly. I blushed, I could feel the warmth flowing into my sunkissed cheeks. He continued staring at me, even as I pulled away. "Are you sure ypu want to go to this party tonight?" He asked me reluctantly. "Yeah? Why wouldn't I?" I asked him. "Just wondering." He answered, pulling the car into reverse. As we drove down the dark road, the excitment began setting in. "Are we there yet?" I asked quickly. He chuckled. "No, might as well get comfortable." He said with a dazzling smile. I bit my lip. Darren and I decided a few weks ago that we would go to this party and then stay at his parents lake house. We were going to the lake house first, so we could cchange. I smiled playfully at him as i settled back and soon fell asleep.

"Kali?" I felt Darren shaking me lightly. We were here. We had finally gotten to the lake house.

I sighed, when i stood, i was convinced that i was sturdy enough to stand. My mistake, i fell right into Darren's arms. He chuckled. "Shut up." i mumbled, steadying myself on the side of the silver convertible. The bitter air bit at my warm cheeks, and i shivered. I walked into the cabin slowly. I watched as Darren flipped on the switch that was right by the door. My eyes opened wider when i saw what was inside the cabin. It was huge! The air smelled faintly of pine. I inhaled eeply, the scent was intoxicating. There was a small room in the far corner and there was brown leather couches spread throughout the living room. There was a room that resembled an inside balcony. I stared in shock. "This?" i asked him. He smiled at me. I forgot how to breath. I loved that smile. I smiled back at him. "Where is the bed?" i ask him, confused. He pointed to the spiral staircase, which i could only think that led up to the the higher room. He sat our two suitcses down and took my soft, cold, hand in his firm, warm one. My skin prckled excitedly, and he guided me to the staircase. I followed him eagerly. I watched as he slowly took each step at a time. When we finally reached the last step, i looked. There was one large bed in the middle of the room. There was a white comforter and a canopy with white lace flowing down from it. My face waas blank. i couldnt think. I couldnt breathe. There was one smaller, less appealing, bed right next to it. It took me a minute to process. "This is so pretty." i whispered as i walked over t the larger white bed. I touched the pure white lace gently, feeling the softness with my fingures. He smiled, clearly happy with my response. I looked at him shyly. "We better get ready for that party." i said smiling at him. He nodded in agreement.

I zipped open my suitcase slowly. I moved sweatpents,t shirts, and jeans untill i finally found the only dress i packed. A lime green, thigh length, one strapped dress. The bottom was layered with the same color green. I slid it on, along with the white heels, my mom had bought me for Christmas. I stood up in them and  i almost fell, before regaining my balance with the bed  post, I heard a dark chuckle behind me and i spun, searching for the source of the sound. I saw Darren in a white T shirt with a black leather jacket over it. He looked incredibly normal, with his blue jeans. I sighed. I quickly pulled my hair down so it fanned over my face. I smiled at him. "Are you ready?" he asked me. "Yes." i said. i pulled my jewerly bag from the suitcase. I handed him the gittering necklace. He had given it t me for my birthday. It had the first letter of his name on it. I wore it everywhere. Unless i was traveling, i was too afraid to loose it. I moved my hair to the left side and he ever so lightly, clicked the necklace into place. I felt the cold chain on my neck, then he placed his hands on either one of my shoulders.I felt his too-warm lips on the side of my neck. I smiled in pleasure. "You know we could just stay here." he murmured against my blazing skin. "Then we would miss the 'party of the century.'" i breathed, quoting his best friend Damion. I had overheard them talking about it at our lunch table. He sighed against my neck. He pulled away slowly, reluctantly. I smiled. He gently placed his arm around my shoulders. I grabbed my small blue handbag and my small white cardigan. I followed him down the stairs and out to his car. I sat in the leather seat for the second time today. The music was low, it sounded like country music. "Country?" i asked reluctantly. He smiled, embarassed. "Its nothing." he began, switching it off. I smiled at him. His hand lay on the console. I entertwined my fingers with his. "I think its cute." i said to him. "I dont." i gave him a mock smile, but i let the subject drop."So, about this party...." he began. "What?" i said, annoyance in my voice. "If your going to try to convince me not to go..." i began. Thats all he had been doing, ever since i told him about it last Monday. "I just dont think its a good idea." he said. "Why is that?" i asked. "I..." he began. I took advantage of his silence. "Exactly, there is no reason we cannot go to this party." i said to him. "Did you know the new kid wil be there?" he asked. "The cocky, annoying one?" i asked. "If by cocky and annoying, you mean the douchebag that was hitting on you-." he began.I interrupted him, as i noticed his hands were becoming a little too tight on the steering wheel. "Yeah, him." The boy came here a few months ago, -i didnt even think you could call him 'new' now-  He is an annoying waste of space low live who thinks he can get any girl by calling her babe a few times and being a jerk. In other words, he is cocky and innapropriate and annoying. The reason Darren is not a fan of his is because a few weeks ago, something happened.

I walked to my next cass, still talking to my friend Gabby. When Gabby bumped into him and a few of his gang buddies. "Sorry" she squeaked. "Watch it." the big one murmured, stopping. "Hang on Joseph" said the big one, the leader. I tried walking ahead, tugging Gabby with me, but the leader blocked my path. "Whats your name?" he asked cocking his head to the left. It was clear he was taling to me, i ignored him. "Get out of my way." i said shaking in fear. "Dont be like that, my names Charles. People like you get to call me Charlie though." he said, he winked. "Fine,  get out of my way Charlie." I said, a little braver. I didnt like that he had taken interest in me. "Dont be like that." he laughed shaking his head. "Go along guys, ill catch up." he said. I shivered. "Gabby ill be right there." i said through chattering teeth. "No, im staying." she said to me in her high pitched voice. I took my eyes off of  the boy. I looked at Gabby, giving her my kindest, calmest, face. "Im fine, i dont want you involved in this." i said to her. "Are you-" she began, but was so rudely cut off. "She said leave." he said sternly. His eyes were still on my face. I nodded at her stiffly. Finally she shuffled away. I looked at him angrily. "Look Charlie, its been really nice chatting with you, but i dont spend my spare time with losers who cant come up with a good pick up line." i said. I breathed. I saw something in his eyes, anger, no more than that. I swallowed, my earlier determination lost. I spun around, flipping my hair in his face. His ice cold hand curled around my forearm painfully. "Ow!" i whispered yelled."You listen to me you perky little-" he started. Ill tell you, i have never felt so relieved to hear Darren's voice. "I thought she said to leave?" he asked. "Who asked you." suddenly i was terrified, not for me, but for Darren. "Darren do-" i began. He held up a finger to silence me. The boy was several inches taller than him. But he was no match for Darren. Darren was the biggest kid in Fairfield High School, exept maybe Damion. "Back. Off." he said, emphasizing each word. You could feel the tension dripping from the air. "Who is gonna make me?" said Charles. I had Darren's back facing me. I watched as they stared each other down. I saw a change in the boy's face, anger from surprise, back to anger, then i thought i saw a smidge of fear in his blue eyes. I must  have been right, because he backed away slightly.I dont know what he did to make him, but he backed away like Darren had just slapped him in the face. He leaned over Darren staring at me. "Ill see you later babe." he said to me. I shuddered, the movement sent me rocking in my shoes. He turned his back and walked away. I let out a breathe, i didnt realize i was holding in. "Are you okay?" asked Darren protectively. "Yes." i lied. I was pretty sure my face gave me away though. I felt his warm arms wound around my torso. It took me a moment to move. When my arms finally registered what i was screaming at them to do, i wound my arms through his.

"Were here." he said quietly. "Will you at least try to have fun?" i asked him. More like begged. I gave him my most pleading smile ever. "He half smiled, but it didnt touch his ears. I pulled his hand to the back of my neck. I leaned in closer to him, he didnt debate, and i kissed him. My heart racing. I pushed my lips to his. He smiled, this time it touched his ears. "Please?" i asked. He groaned, throwing his head back on the seat. "Fine." he whispered. I smiled, happy with my temporary victory. I opened the car door slowly, taking my time to take in the crowd around us. I got stares from the boys around us. I stood up out of the car. I smoothed my dress. Darren was already right beside my door. He grabbed m hand in both of his. He looked around nervously. "Hey." i said. "Fun." i reminded him. He nodded, defeated.
