"Wake up lil' bro, time for school." my brother said, knocking on my door. Today is my first day of high school and I'm not too excited about it. I mean, all my friends live somewhere else. John lives in Oregon, Rose lives in New York, and Jade lives in some weird country. I'm here in Austin, Texas, living in a cramped up apartment with my older bro, Dirk. I don't know what happened to my parents. I've never even met them.

After waking up, I just laid still in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. A couple minutes passed until I got up lazily out of bed to get dressed. Dressed in my red and white baseball shirt, black jeans, red Converse, and shades, I made my way to the bathroom.

"Hurry up Dave we have to leave soon!" Dirk yelled from the kitchen.

"Yeah, yeah I am." Quickly, I brushed my teeth and combed my hair. "Okay I'm ready now." I called out to him while grabbing my backpack and walking over to him.

"Ready to go?"

I nodded. "Yeah, I guess."

"Good. Can you walk home? I have to work late again." Dirk asked, while opening the front door and walking out.

"Yeah, I can." I followed him out and waited for him to lock the door before I started walking. We both walked to Dirk's car and got in. Dirk started the car and pulled out of our parking spot. He drove cautiously to my school and parked by the entrance.

"Good luck lil' bro. You'll be fine." Dirk smiled slightly and waved before driving away. I made my way towards my homeroom and sat in an empty seat, somewhere in the back. Several minutes later, the teacher walked in.

"Alright class. My name is Ms. Robin. I'm going to begin taking attendance now." She stared calling out some names that I didn't recognize. Then she called my name. "Dave Strider."

I raised my hand and said quietly; "Here" Some of the kids looked at me and stared. I heard some of them whisper things like: "He thinks he's so cool because of those shades he's wearing..." and "Look at Mr. Cool Guy..." I just ignored them and sat there silently. Little do they know, I only wear these sunglasses to hide my eyes. They're bright red. It's kind of an unusual color for human eyes so I cover them up.

When she was done taking attendance, she called us up to get our class schedule and locker. When the teacher called my name, I got up and walked casually to her. I got my paper and sat back down, trying to look at anyone else. Someone threw a crumpled up piece of paper at me moments after I had sat down. I un-crumpled it and read it.

It said, "Stop trying to be cool because you're not, LOSER." I sighed, being slightly annoyed and folded the paper up. I put it in my pocket and sat quietly waiting for the class to end.

It felt like hours before the bell rang. I got up and put my backpack on, leaving the crowded classroom to find my locker.

"Locker 1473. That should be right here." I said to myself. I found it and checked it to see if it worked. "46-08-32..." I put in the combination and opened it. "Cool it works." I slammed it shut and went off to my next class, English.

On the way to my English class, I bumped into a girl on accident.

"Hey watch where you're going, dumbass! Maybe it's too dark with those shades you're wearing!" she yelled.

"Sorry, I wasn't paying attention to where I was going."

"Obviously!" she snapped at me, storming off. I sighed to myself and continued walking to my next class, cautiously. I arrived at the classroom and sat in the back again. Just in like homeroom, the teacher introduced herself and took attendance after the bell rang. Again, someone threw a paper at me. Immediately I could tell it was from the same person. because of the handwriting.

This time it said, "Seriously man, you're not cool so take those stupid glasses off." I rolled my eyes and shoved it in my pocket. The teacher gave us an assignment and I got right to it. It was a short assignment so I finished early. I sat there quietly and took out a paper to doodle on. I started to draw a little comic when suddenly another paper was thrown at me. Getting annoyed, I picked up the paper and put it in my pocket without reading it.

The same thing happened in my other classes. Every note I got, I put in my pocket, not reading it. I sat by myself during lunch and nutrition on a bench under a tree. By the time school was out, I exited school through a back gate, trying to avoid other kids. I walked straight home and locked myself in my room. Out of frustration, I threw my backpack on the floor and broke down in tears. Kneeling on the floor, I tossed my glasses aside, remembering what the notes said. I took out a total of 8 notes out of my pocket and read them over as tears were streaming down my face. "Not so cool are you?" I read in my head. I got up and threw the papers onto my bed.

I was done with everything I had to put up with. Being very frustrated with myself, I rolled up my sleeves and scratched my arms roughly. I was now sobbing loudly, digging my nails deeper into my skin. The scratches began to turn red with blood.

"What have I done?" I questioned myself. I got up and sat on my bed, choking back tears. Then I heard the front door open.

"Hey Dave you home?  I didn't have to work late after all." I heard him walking to my door. "You in there?"

"Oh er y-yeah, I am." I answered, trying not to sound like I was crying.

"Open the door bro! Tell me how cool your day was!"

"Alright." I began to get nervous. There was still blood on my arms. I had so many thoughts rushing through my mind. Quickly, I pulled my sleeves down, not wiping off the blood off and dried my tears. I opened the door.

"Hey where are your shades? Why are your eyes all red?" Fuck, I had forgotten to put my sunglasses on.

"What are you talking about? My eyes have always been red."

"Hey man, don't be a smart-ass. Now tell me what's up."

I nodded and frantically pulled up my sleeves, showing my arms to him. "I'm so sorry bro..." Dirk frowned at me, looking disappointed.

"What did you do that for lil' bro?" I said nothing. Instead, I went back into my room and got the notes from my bed. "What's that?" I handed him the papers and waited for a response while he read them. Being very guilty, I looked down towards my feet, starting to cry again.

"Oh. Man I'm sorry. Do you know who gave you these?" I shook my head. Dirk sighed and hugged me. "Why'd you scratch your arms? You could've just told me and talked to me about it."

"I thought you were coming home late again so I didn't bother waiting. I didn't think you'd care either..."

"Why would you think that?"

"Well you're never home and when you are, you just take a nap or watch your anime." I started to cry even more. Dirk started to cry too.

"Please don't do this again. I promise I will always be there for you. I won't take the late shifts anymore." he said, hugging me tighter.

"Alright, I promise I won't." He let go of me and pulled me into the bathroom.

"Go wash the blood off and put these band aids on those scratches." Dirk handed me some band aids and I did as told. "Let's go out to eat tonight, yeah?"

I nodded and smiled. "Sure. One sec." I went back into my room and picked up my sunglasses. I put them back on and walked with Dirk to the car. After we ate dinner, we went home and talked about today. I feel like my relationship with my brother improved very much.
