Sarah leaned her hot forehead against the cool window pane, and felt the cold spread across her skin. Not caring whether she now had a red mark across her smooth, pale forehead, she pressed her skull up against the window.
She was sure.... But maybe now... Not so much.
Wiping away the condensation with a sleeve, she stared out into the darkness, searching the grey sky for any sign of what she thought she'd seen. Aggravated and tired, she pulled up the window and latched it onto the side of the wall so it didn't close on top of her. She leaned her head out and squinted, looking for a pair of mismatched eyes in the stormy outside.
'Get back here you coward! I saw you! I know I did!' She yelled, unable to think of the many students who would be sitting up and judging her. From across the courtyard, she saw a light flick on, and some curtains part, but it was safe, because they wouldn't be able to know who it was from over there.
She waited until the curtains had been pulled together, and the light switched off, and then pulled open her drawer. She took out a crumpled piece of paper, and a piece of string, and tied it to the outside of the window.
Then, without making a sound, she pulled down the window, shut the curtains, and flicked the light off, falling once again into a deep and dreamless sleep.
Outside the window, however, it was a different story. An owl, with beautifully mismatched eyes, scratched at the piece of paper.
Finally, after much hassle and about three broken claws, it grasped it in its talons and flew away into the night.

'Jesus Sarah, you look awful!'
'What happened?'
'Did you get woken up by that random yelling?'
'Another nightmare?'
Sarah slammed her spoon down into her crummy, soggy, Univeristy cereal. All these stupid questions and no answers, she felt like she was playing Who wants to be a millionaire, only the prize was that people left you alone.
She was sick of being the entertainment. She'd tried to cover up the dark circles underneath her eyes with makeup, but she wasn't very experienced with it, and it made her look worse than every before.
'Y'know someone who's great at makeup'
'Shut UP brain.' She thought, 'I have three classes today that I need to concentrate in otherwise I am NOT going to pass my final exams. If I start thinking about HIM then I won't be able to think about anything else for the rest of the day.'
She imagined what he'd say if he heard her say that to him. He'd probably smirk a bit, then pretend he didn't care. Or, not, he might even make her say it again. Probably that choice, if she was going to be honest.
She wondered if he'd got the note.
Maybe he'd torn it up.
Yeah. That was probably it.
Or maybe he'd give it to Hoggle, or one of her other friends.
And it wasn't as if it mattered really, all she'd written was a few lines about how it had been a while, and she wanted to see him, and all the others again. She really did miss them.
But she missed him most of all.
'Sarah?' She looked up. A fair, blonde girl, who she thought might be called Esther was looking down at her.
'Yes?' She answered, sneering at the girl. Jesus, she had picked up some bad habits. Esther shuffled nervously, and Sarah noticed the grip on her books tightened.
'Well, we both have English with Professor Harvey, so I thought maybe we could go together?'
Sarah looked down at her cereal, silently mourning the alone time she was about to give up.
'Sure, Esther. I'll be right with you.'
She stood up, swung her bag over her shoulders, and followed Esther.

As Sarah lay in bed that night, she thought she heard scratching on the window, but it was a windy night, and the branches of the nearby crab-Apple tree would sometimes scrape the glass, so she thought nothing of it.
But it wasn't a twig, or a cat, or any other explanation that you could possibly of come up with.
It was an owl.
Well, not really.
It was the Goblin King, and as he watched Sarah sleeping through a gap in the thick fabric of the curtains, he couldn't help the thought of pure and utter ecstasy that came with the knowledge that he, the Goblin King and Lord of the Labyrinth, had a girl, who had a crush on him.
