PREFACE
It was 1803. The night had set in and the moon shone above, casting its light upon the small village. The night had brought a cool breeze which locked the village in its icy grip. The villagers lay rugged up in their beds, trying to soak up what warmth they could find. Away from the village, in a field far from town something was happening. Someone had braved the winter's night breeze and stood in the field, staring at the stars that shone above. They twinkled in the sky like small diamonds and the girl smiled. Her bare feet melted into the dirt that surrounded her and her toes wriggled, enjoying the feeling of the earth beneath her feet. The girl spread open her arms like a bird and lifted her chin up to face the sky. Her eyes fell closed and the smile disappeared from her face.
"Futuea meas sanguine, ponam discrimine: fieri infectum non potest," she began, as large black clouds began circling around above her and lightning cracked the ground around her.
"Non evigilabit ad lunam, ut in te, pulsate. Ego lux surrecerit ad lunam, mea alumna, tui cum mihi vita!" the girl screamed into the sky. A loud thunder crashed and the earth shook beneath her feet. The girl let out a large booming laugh as lightning struck the ground around her.
"What have you done?" a voice cried out from behind her. Arms still extended in the air the girl turned her head and looked at the figure rushing towards her.
"Lady Grace, glad you could make it!" the girl smiled, slowly lowering her arms.
"You tell me now, Miss Amethyst, you tell me what you have done this instant!" Grace ordered, stopping beside her.
Amethyst's grin slowly began to fade, her eyes turning serious.
"I did what had to be done!" Amethyst yelled, the thunder mimicking her screams with a loud roar. Grace looked towards the sky with worry, and hugged herself due to the chill of the night.
"You shouldn't have done that Miss Amethyst. Nothing good comes from speaking to the moon," Grace shook, looking around anxiously, "They'll punish you."
"They were already going to punish me! They were going to destroy me! I did what I needed to do to protect myself! I will not be a victim to them!" Amethyst screamed.
Suddenly, the black of the night flashed a violent purple and Amethyst dropped to her knees.
"Amethyst! Miss Amethyst!" Grace cried, dropping to her knees and grabbing Amethyst's shoulders. Amethyst let out a painful cry and looked up to the sky. Her eyes flew open and Grace gasped,
"Miss Amethyst! Your eyes!"
Amethyst turned to face Grace and Grace looked at her with shock and curiosity, for her eyes were shining a bright purple, the same as the lightning that struck the ground around them.
