"Alice? Can I come up there?" Alex asked. Alice was back in her treehouse, not paying attention to the world around her.
"Sure love. Just be careful."
"As always"Alice watched as Alex looked around in amazement at the paintings around them, Alice spent so much time here, it was the only place she felt peace in her crazy life. She felt peace with Alex as well, he gave her warmth and laughter, God she loved him. She was currently painting a sunset, the orange paint smeared on her cheek as she grinned ear to ear. Alice had only been with Alex two years but they had been so heavenly and beautiful. Alex's hands slid around her waist, and his chin propped up on her head. Alice turned in his arms, dropping her paint brush and burrowing her face in his chest. However something wasn't right, something felt different, his buttons where all over the place, and what was that smell? Alice took in a breath, PERFUME? She pulled away and saw hickey's and lipstick marks.
"WHAT. THE. HELL." Alice felt tears in her eyes
"Alice it's not what you think-"
"It's EXACTLY what I think. Pig."
He gasped, Alice was always so gentle.
"Listen ass hole we're done, I want you to leave"
"Alice please"
"Please what? Suck your dick? Looks like you got that covered, and trust me there isn't much to cover"
Alex growled.
"At least I found someone who will!"
"Yeah but you'll never find someone that loves you so bye."
He climbed down and Alice sat next to her canvas, her paint must have gotten knocked over in the process of tearing away from Alex. Red, blue, green and yellow bled all over the wooden floor, Alice would've cleaned it up, her paint was precious to her. nothing mattered now. She watched as her watercolor sunset sat all wet and dripping because she just sprayed it, colors were mixing in ways they weren't supposed to.
But Alice just laid there with tears welling in her eyes.
*five months later*
"Alice honey. It's time for dinner!" Alice's mother Beatrice called. "Alice? Dinner time!" Alice didn't move. "I'm sending it up Alice."
Beatrice set the food in the dumbwaiter which Alice had set down earlier. It was a system of a pulley and some rope which allowed her to get supplies and food and the occasional sassy note from her mother.
Alice grabbed the food from the dumwaiter and started eating. She only ate a bit and put it aside. She began painting again, a beautiful picture of a sunset.
After she finished she put a quote on the back.
"The sun set on us a while ago and it won't ever rise again."
Alice started to cry. Remembering all the good times was a daily thing for Alice. She would paint one picture and it would remind her of him. That lying bastard. But she loved him. And she wasn't over him. That's why she would cry to herself every morning and every night. And why she wouldn't leave her treehouse. Or eat a whole lot. Alice was tearing herself apart from the inside out and no one could stop her. Alice just wanted to escape into the beautiful paintings she created, she wanted to sit on the beaches and dance on the clouds. Was because she wasn't beautiful? Is that why Alex did what he did or were they two different colors never being able to mix on order to make something beautiful? Alice felt tears in her eyes, as she added the last few touches and hung it up to dry.She opened the window and looked outside. Her treehouse over looked acres and acres of woods, it was early summertime and the sun was resting on the horizon. Birds and cicadas sang out into the evening, the noise was oddly comforting. Alice looked over and into her house were her mother was talking to her little brother, Evan. It looked like she was helping him with his homework, and patting him on the head. Evan was very smart for a nine year old, and it impressed Alice sometimes.
Alice turned and looked back at her paintings, it was all she had right now that kept her going. She had a hammock in the tree house for sleeping and it was comfortable. Tonight all she wanted was to sleep, her sadness was getting the best of her. Alice climbed into the hammock which creaked with her weight, huge colored pillows were scattered her and there and a big comfy red blanket. Alice snuggled in the hammock and she opened the window above it. She looked at the steadily rising moon, taking in the beautiful night sky. She closed her eyes and held her hands together.
"I don't do this often and I'm sure you know that, but please do me one huge favor. Make life better for me. Please." Alice starting crying again, eventually falling asleep, the gentle arms of dreams enveloping Alice into them.
