I got this idea from a book I read, called A World Away.

Louis

" Mum, do you know where Pa's tools went? " I asked my mother, who was kneeling outside over the washboard.

" No, I'm sorry. I don't. " She looked up at me from under her kapp.

" Thanks anyways mum. " I smiled, turning around.

" Wait, dear. I've got a question. "

I sat down with her, twiddling with my thumbs.

" Yes? "

" Haven't you been thinking about your rumspringa? " She cocked her head to the side.

" My what? " I furrowed my eyebrows.

" When we were teenagers, we had a year or so to break the rules, to run wild. We go into the English world and learn things, like music and dancing, and movies. Then you can come back and get baptized, and then court a lady, later marrying her. If you choose to stay, you will be shunned. "

My eyes widened. Shunned? That would be terrible.

" That sounds interesting, but shunned? " She nodded.

I shook my head.

" That seems really interesting mum. I need to leave to the hardware store now. Tell the girls I love them. "

I stood up, brushing my trousers off.

I work afternoons at my pa's hardware store. After grabbing my workbooks and quickly sliding them on, I ran to my family's wagon.

" Afternoon, Delilah. " I waved to our neighbor, who was tending her garden.

" Afternoon, Louis! How's your mum? " She asked, waving.

" She's fine, so are the girls. Pa said the stores really busy, I'm excited. "

" That's good, son. Run along now. " She shoos me away.

Climbing in the wagon, I clicked to our horse, Liz.

" Go, girl. "

Ladies waved at me as I rode down the pebbled street. I tipped my hat.

" Good afternoon, ladies. " I smiled at them, stopping at the store.

" Good afternoon, Louis! " They waved, batting their eyelashes.

I'd never be interested in them, to be honest. I don't like girls. My family doesn't know though, we're a religious family. According to the bible, it's against religious law to love the same sex. I don't believe that.

" Hey, pa! " I called out to him, he was most likely in the back working.

I sat at the counter, doodling on the yellow notepad that was there to take prices, when the bell over the door rang.

I gaped, it was an English boy.

Take a wild guess at who the boy is? Eh, eh?
