Grayson's POV

"Stop it Grayson."
"Cara!"
"I cheated on you Grayson! You're not supposed to wanna work things out! Okay? That's why I cheated."
"You didn't want to be with me enough to cheat?"
"Yeah. I can't do this relationship crap anymore. It's not me! You're too good of a boyfriend and I'm a horrible girlfriend."
"Wow."
"I didn't want to hurt you."
"It's a little late for that!"
"I'm sorry, I'm not ready to go all in."

I hang up the phone. I can't believe her. I go over to my window and crawl out onto the roof. The cool wind calms me down while my back feels the rough texture of the shingles as I lie down.

"Rough night?" I turn my head to see my neighbour/friend Jen on her roof.
"I got dumped."
"What! Grayson Dolan got dumped? That's impossible." She stands up and walks to the edge of her roof.
"Thanks." I say walking to the edge of mine.
"Who dumped ya?"
"Cara. Cara Trimble."
"Oh my god! You're the guy from West she cheated on?"
"Guess so."
"Sorry Grayson."
"She did it because I was too good of a boyfriend." I say shyly.
"She sounds crazy." I look at my hands.
"She probably is." I joke.

"I think I know the guy. Yeah he's in my grade, just disgusting!"
"Really?"
"Absolutely horrendous."
"He's really that bad looking?"
"Oh no, he's hot as fuck, he's just a dick." I smile and laugh.
"There's that smile!"

I look up to see her smirking. Her head is rested on her knees pulled up to her chest and arms wrapped around.

"Thanks Jen."
"Hey, that's what I'm here for Grayson."
"You wanna come over?" I say pointing to my room.
"Can't. I have a trig test tomorrow I gotta study for."
"Then what are ya doing out here on the roof?"
"Talking to you!" She gets up and walks to her window.
"Night Jen."
"Night Gray." She climbs back inside and I lie down again.

I wish Jen went to my school, but she doesn't, because the division of my town is right between us. She has to go to East Central and I have to go to West Central. Of course the one girl that I understand or have fun with, has to live in the other town. She has lived next door for three years, and I think tonight was the first night she called me Gray. I mean, most of my friends call me Gray, but she never had. I wish we hung out more, because when we do, its like the best day ever.

"Gray?"
"Out here!"
I hear Ethan climb out the window and come over to me. He stops and stands above me.
"What are you doing?"
"Talking to Jen!"
He looks at her house.
"Then where is she?"
"She just left."
"You feeling alright Gray?"
"Shut up."

I stand up and climb back in my room, E follows me.

"What's wrong?"
"Cara dumped me!"
"No! You're kidding."
"Nope, turns out I'm too good of a boyfriend."
"What the fuck?"
"I know, she cheated on me hoping I would just end it."
"Aw I'm sorry man."
"I don't understand girls."
"No one does."
"Why can't they all be like Jen?"
"Because then life would be simple."
"True!"
"Well goodnight Gray."
"Night E."

He leaves and I turn off my lights. I plug in my phone and see a text from Jen.

'wanna get lunch with me tmrw?'

'yeah! where?'

'walters?'

'sounds good. see ya tmrw.'

'night Gray.'

'night Jen'
