I'm standing stoically in front of a gloomy black lake. The trees around me dance contentedly to the loud hum of the wind that can be heard for many miles. Suddenly, I hear a the sound of branch snap somewhere in the dark behind me.
Nervously but with extreme caution, I turn around to see a large, brooding figure hovering angrily over me. Just as a booming shriek erupts out of the mouth of the dark figure, I run straight into the lake that starts to swallow me whole.
I scream out to the mysterious figure that simply watches the lake gobbled me up. I feel the air leaving my lungs as I lose every ounce of will I have to live, when suddenly I hear a voice in the distance calling out to me.
"Happy 15th Birthday Clara!" I open my eyes relived that what I had just witnessed was a nightmare. My mother and father stood at the edge of my bed with a chocolate cake that had fourteen candles placed on the surface.
I got up and blew out my fourteen candles before hugging both of my parents.
"Thanks guys, you didn't have to do this. I know how busy the both of you are." That's the truth. They're both celebrated doctors that work day in and and day out. If I were to be honest, they probably know their patients better than their own daughter.
"Nah its nothing, considering that we're going to be at the office all day again." My mom responds with a guilty smile plastered onto her face.
Of course they are; I mean what's different? It's always been exactly like this for the past fifteen years of my life. All of my birthday's have always been the same, and seriously I should stop expecting some magical change to occur.
"So when do you guys go to work again?" I ask rolling my eyes to emphasis my anger at their absence on my birthday.
"Oh we need to go right now," my mom says checking her wristwatch. "Bye sweetie have a great birthday and don't forget to brush your teeth before school."
Shit. School. I completely forgot. My parents walk out without another word as I check the time. Oh. My. Gosh. It's 7:30.
I race out of bed and change into a somewhat acceptable outfit while grabbing an apple and my backpack and racing out the door.
I arrive to school sweating and in near tears as this was not how I expected my birthday to begin.
Just as I walk into first period, the bell rings signaling that the beginning of my normal day has started. But what I didn't know was that today would change everything.
