Riley felt so cold. His wrists were wrapped in freezing metal and his chest had been exposed with a contraption hugging his body. As he recovered from unconsciousness, he heard distant voices. His head pounded with pain and his throat ached with dryness. He wobbled his head, blinking while the room he was in became clear.

The voices were familiar to him, but he couldn't quite figure out who they were.

"Riley, are you awake?" a girl asked nervously.

"He's awake, give him some time."

"Fiona?" Riley whispered breathlessly, he had zero energy to even lift a finger and his body felt like it was on a constant run.

"Riley, I'm here, are you okay?" his sister replied.

"I . . . I don't know. Are we dead?"

"No, the Morseeker didn't kill us. It captured us, we're in the tower. I don't know how the demons have a guardian working with them, but it has to be something seriously bad."

The room was spinning, but Riley was trying to fight it. The sickness he felt wasn't natural, it was attacking every inch inside of him, someone had done something to him.

"Wh-why aren't we dead?" Riley asked.

"I think they're waiting for our powers to run out so they can use it against us. If we're weak and powerless then they can kill us," Pearl replied.

"They're gonna be waiting along time, and that's part of our torture," said Fiona.

"Where's Hart?"

"He's in front of me," Pearl said. "I don't think he's alive, though. He hasn't moved, spoken or opened his eyes since we were put here."

What is here, Riley thought. He knew what the outside of the tower looked like and only heard stories of what went on inside. He meant to speak his thoughts but his body was too weak. He used what little energy he had to turn his head and inspect the room. It was empty and dark, very dark, with only two torches on one wall, leaving the other side without light.

There was a large cylinder type of structure in the middle of the room with a couple of seats attached around it. They all occupied each seat, as far as he could tell. He couldn't see if there were other people on the dark side of the cylinder.

"He's not dead," Riley forced out even though his body screamed at him to stop fighting and just close his eyes and sleep.

"Right, his sister, Seraphina. I don't understand how they work."

"There's only one thing that can kill them," Riley said softly."It's a dagger, but you have to kill them both. If you kill only one, they will return from the dead again."

"How long do you think until Hart comes back?"

"He's paralyzed, not dead. Judging by the difference of our time, Seraphina should already be alive. That means Hart could wake up anytime, and when he does he will get us out of here. I just hope that he doesn't lose control."

"Lose control?"

Memories of the time when Hart was a monster the size of a house came to his mind. That was the first and last time Riley had been afraid of him. He had been afraid of what he was becoming and that there would be no turning back. Hart had lost all control of himself and Riley didn't want to see that happen again. Seraphina told him that when he killed Hart, she was losing herself. The connection between her and Hart was special and probably one of the most intriguing things to exist in this universe. It wasn't anything close to being simple and easy to understand, it was out of this world. They were one, and without each other, they were nothing.
