This old and derelict house is going to be my new home. I'm not happy about it, it looks disgusting. I hold onto the strap of my backpack on my shoulder, ready to see the horror that awaits.
"Emmy! Help me with the boxes!" I turn to my mom, she's holding a box close to her chest, her hair ruffled around from all the hard work of moving. I run to her and take the box from her hands, a sigh escapes from her. I smile at my mom, she's hard working and caring, sometimes bossy and a little too persistent but I love her.
"Hey numskull, open the gate so we can move the boxes in!" My little brother shoots me a glare before rolling his eyes and getting the keys from his pocket. He shoves the key into the lock, unlocking the white metal gate in front of the house. He pulls it opens before slowly walking to my mom and grabbing a box from her arms.
I hold my breath - careful not to breathe in any of the rotting smell – and walk in and place the box on the ground. I look all around me, cringing at the sight I can see. My brother walks up behind me and coughs.
"This is where we're staying?!" I turn and look at him, the skin on his nose crinkling and eyes squinting as if he was ready to turn on his heel and run away. I get a sudden peculiar feeling and a smirk forms on my face.
"Yeah, this is where we're staying. If you have a problem, you can always go live on the streets with the cats and find your food in the trash. I'd be fine without you." I smile innocently and walk past him ignoring his pathetic comebacks.
I see my other little brother standing next to my mom, complaining about how awful our new house is. I don't blame him, not hiding what he has to say and all. He's only 8, three years younger than me.
"Adam, honey, you know that we don't have a lot of money and that dad's job manage to get us here right? We can always fix it up later, it just doesn't feel like home yet because you haven't seen it properly." He pouts and crosses his arms, grabs a box from the van and rushes inside.
"Kids, why don't you go check out the rest of the house?" I nod and start walking around. I walk out back to the gate and continue down the hallway. On my left is a shabby, run down kitchen. Its cabinets dirty and stains all over it, while the bench tops have rotted away. I hold back my vomit as I continue walking.
I open a door; it creaks as I push it open. I look inside to see a big, spacious, empty room with floorboards, like the rest of the house. This room doesn't smell, and it isn't worn down like the rest of the house. I close the door, walk a few paces and find myself at another door. I open it and peep my head in, it too is spacious, but it has tatami mats set out.
I walk in and touch the floor, the smooth feeling running under my fingers. I guess this room would be mine. I close the door quietly and turn around, a few steps in front of me, leading to another door.
I climb up the steps and arrive at the door, I try to open the door but it's stuck. I push harder and finally feel the door moving. I apply more force and soon I find myself on the floor. The door wide open behind me and darkness and emptiness surrounding me. I get up onto my feet and look around. There's something about this room that creeps me out. Is it that there's no windows? Or maybe the fact that the floor's covered in dust and the air's cold and thin. I don't like the feeling in here, so I walk out and shut the door hoping that I'll never have to enter there again.
"Oh Emmy, I'm sorry but could you be a dear and help carry the furniture from the van?" I smile at my mom and give her a hug.
"Mom, you just sit tight and have a rest, I'll make Cody my minion." She gives a smile of relief.
"Cody!" I see his little blonde head peep out from behind the van.
"What do you want, ya' demon?" I hold back the urge to punch the guts out of him.
"Mom says we need to get the furniture to the living room." He grunts and opens the door to the van. I walk next to him. There isn't much in there; just a few mattresses and chairs. I start taking out a mattress, me at one end and Cody at the other. After a few minutes, we complete our task and mom tells us to go exploring the town.
I stuff my hand into the pockets of my short, this is a pain. Having to move and all. I walk around, old people surrounding me, their wrinkled faces scarring me for life.
"Oi! That isn't allowed!" I hear voices. Not voices of old people, voices of children. I run a few meters and see a bunch of boys covered in dirt yelling at each other, a soccer ball in the middle of them.
"You boys playing soccer? I want to join." One boy gasps.
"But you're a girl! Girls should go play with their dollies and cook food." I walk up to the boy who spoke and grab him by the collar.
"If I can score, I get to play. 'Kay?" He nods.

"What?! There's no way you scored!" I smirk at the boys. They're all shocked that I beat them.
"Well I did." They shoot me dirty looks and I roll my eyes. "Well, remember our agreement?" They nod, their heads hung low.

"How was your day honey?" I arrive home and take off my shoes at the front door, I see my mom holding my baby sister, Chloe.
"It was fine, I guess." I walk to my mom and take Chloe from her arms.
"Well, dinner's ready so come have some." I nod and walk to the living room. Since we don't really have a dining room, we eat in the living room. My mom hands me a bowl as I sit down on a chair.
I eat my macaroni and cheese quickly and say thanks for the meal. I walk to the first room, to see what's in there. I see a big mattress in the middle of the room, I guess this means that this is mom and dad's room. I walk to the room with the tatami mast, but before I open the door, I realize that there's a black door at the end of the hallway. It had a different feeling to the rest of the house. Like something would come through the door and pounce out on me.
I walk to it and open it. A cold wind blows my hair back, surprising me a little. A grassy area now in sight, it's still light outside so I can see pretty clearly. The grass looks so calm and inviting, lightly swaying from the wind. There's a well a few meters out with a little shed next to it. Then it hit me, we don't have a bathroom. I realize that that is the toilet, that little shed. I sigh and close the door, the knob feels cold and the wind from before now gone. I open the door to the room with the tatami mats. I lie awake that night, annoyed by the heat and the snoring of my brothers. This will take some getting used to.
